You just might have a corrupted registry but it's easy to fix though just click on start - run - type regedit then In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

In the right pane, click UpperFilters and or LowerFilters then delete both of them (sometimes only one of either of this shows up, but that's ok)

After deleting filters restart the computer and that should fix the problem.

Should you have any other questions just kindly leave a comment.

Cheers~

It will not play Verbatim DVD-R disc that I burnt on my computer.

If it can read any other disk, you should burn your disk again because burning process was incorrect. your computer can't recognize the disk. In this case, probably you can't do anything, no way to try to read a bad disk if computer can't even "see" it.
By the way, you should test to read the disk on some other computer.
If happens with ALL your disks, your optical player is defective.
Again test reading with other computer if record was made correctly
As for your device, you should check if worth to repair and decide if repair or replace it.

Disc driver not reading discs

Can be several reasons
1. Disk is upside down
2. Lens is durty. Use CD/DVD cleaning disk
3. Disk is recorded in higher speed than your driver can read (for instance reading speed is 16, but disk is recorded on 24).
4. DVD drive is damaged or not connected properly.

After I insert a dvd disc in the dvd drive, it still asks me to isert a disc in the drive. It seems that it is not able to read the disc. We currently subscribe to netflix. Certain dvd"s whhen inserted...

If it is a hardware fault, a fault in your drive, it occurs on every disk
if it is a disk fault it occurs only when faulty disks are used.
Probably Netflix discs are bad, wrong region code, or scratched, or badly copied

DVD PLAYS CD'S BUT WONT PLAY DVD'S

Aquarius0128 there are two things to consider here.. dvd's recorded on a computer need to be closed/finalized after you have recorded onto them in order to be used on a stand alone player.. they will play ok on original recorder because of the design of these machines finalizing prepares the structure of the disc so it can be recognised by other players as a dvd video disc.. you will usually see a 'finalize disc' option in your recording program

Second issue is this.. even if finalized an older (or even some modern) stand alone players will not recognise a recorded disc made on a computer or even if it can there are different formats DVD+R DVD-R and even DVD-RAM and DVD-RW (the two latter ones are rarely recognised outside a computer)

Watching wmv files on DVd

MPEG-2 video is the file format you’ll need to convert to, but you cannot simply burn the MPEG-2 to a DVD and automatically play it in a DVD player.
The easily way is to buy software that will make the transition smooth; I recommend VSO Convert to DVD.

Doesn't recognize any disks

I updated my firmware from 1413 to 1416 found on avforums. This is for european units. I suggest you also complain to Toshiba Japan as there are known issues with the xs32. We all need a firmware update. See AVforums.

My unit will not recognise RAM discs anymore - even those that I had previously used.

Have you thought of replacing the DVD drive. See AVforums.
