Since you do not specify the model number for your HP laptop one cannot be too specific. On my Toshiba laptop activation and deactivation of the touch pad is enacted by pressing the Fn-F9 sequence.

The actual Function key to press after the Fn key might have the picture of a touch pad on it. Examine tour laptop keyboard.

Did you try what I suggested?
I consulted the user's and maintenance manual of the computer and did read that the laptop has an Fn key to the right of the Left CTRL key.

Look at each Fx key to see if one of them has a marking that suggests the touchpad. Once you find it press the correct sequence.

Thank you for your reply. It is actually very informative and simple. I do have a synaptic pointing device problem as well. I dont have any problem with my touchpad but rather with the synaptic driver which ceased working. I looked in the control panel " mouse" properties and everything seems ok...the driver is installed and update. I also checked msconfig.exe and saw that it was also scheduled to start working on start-up.

So what the heck do i miss ?

If your computer have a, Synaptics Touchpad you can try these steps:

1. Access the properties of the Synaptics Pointing Device by right-clicking on the system tray icon at the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. If you do not see the icon, open your Control Panel and select the "Performance and Maintenance" option. Click "System", then "Hardware", then "Device Manager" to view the devices on your computer. Open the "Mice and Other Pointing Devices" selection.

2. Click on the "Device Settings" tab of the "Mouse Properties" window. The "Device Settings" tab is at the top of the window and located farthest to the right

3. Highlight the Synaptics Touchpad from the list of available pointing devices. Click the "Disable" button underneath the list. Click "OK" on the pop-up menu to confirm your selection. Click "OK" on the Mouse Properties window to close the window. Your Synaptics Touchpad will now be disabled.

Make sure to connect a USB mouse to your laptop before disabling the touchpad so that you will still have control of your pointer.

Hope this help. Goodluck!

The arrow on the mouse kepts junping around ?

You are probably using a laptop with a touchpad. What is happening is that your thumbs are touching the touch-pad as you type and the cursor is jumping around. Solution: disable your touch pad. You can go to Start > Control Panel > Mouse > Touch Pad > Disable

Another solution is to go to the Dell website > Support and Drivers > download and install the Synaptics Pointing Device driver and disable your touch pad using the options in this new driver.

Mouse moves on its own

Your palm might be brushing on the touch pad while you are typing that is probably why the cursor jumps to a different location. as for disabling the touch pad I think that it is not possible unless you install a synaptics driver for your laptops touch pad.

Touch pad

First check if your Synaptics Touchpad is well configured in System Panel ---> Hardware, under "another pointing devices".
If so, then go to Control Panel ---> Mouse ---> Synaptics Touchpad. There you can enable/disable properties.
To get the pad properly setup, you should try to download and install te SP21661 pack from HP/Compaq, that pack comes with all the features you can use, very useful for W2K & WinXP.
