You will need to purchase PC2100 DDR SODIMM ram. Your laptop can take up to 1 GB of ram. I recommend two 512 MB sticks.

The maximum amount of memory you can install is 1GB 266 Mhz SDRAM DDR SDRAM (512 -MB in slots 1 and 2)
The motherboard will not handle any amounts larger.
It is suggested that you use Compaq branded memory to ensure compatibility with what you have. Otherwise, pick two chips that are the same.

This site will show you where to find the location of the memory.
The slots are below the keyboard to the rightr of the track pad. THe "Tabs" that hold the lid down can be seen if you look at the bottom left of the keyboard area. You need a flathead screwdriver size small to remove the lid.

Probably however if you upgrade the motherboard you will have to upgrade the CPU, and the memory, possibly the hard drive if the old board is IDE and the new is sata. Also you would have to upgrade the power supply if it's so old it may not have sata power connectors.

This pc would not benefit from a CPU upgrade. You could buy a used pc much more powerfull than this one from sites like Ebay for about £50 or so.
You would need more memory, older memory is now very expensive.
So it would cost more money to upgrade this pc than it would to buy a replacement.

My evo is running slow, i was thinking of upgrading the ram. what type of ram and what is the max?

Hi,
mine was running slow too. Like I'd turn it on and go grub some coffee, than make some toast and then after It'd bring the windows screen on.
If that's the case I suggest to try different hard drive, but my guess it's motherboard issue:
Here is memory information for EVO D51. Please let me know what model you have, so I can be more specific

Evo d3d upgrade!?

In the older days it was easier to tell you right away which processor would fit as there was not much variance in slot configuration. The Pentium 4 was released in several slot (sometimes called socket or pin-array configurations)configurations. The easiest way to tell is to remove your processor. Where it plugs into the slot (socket) you will see marked on the slot holder the configuration (Should say something like Socket 775 or Socket 478). Once you know what will fit in there you can go about ordering your upgraded processor. I would do some more information digging to see if your motherboard can handle the upgrade and how much memory it can handle. Have you already upgraded the memory? Sometimes more memory can make your computer faster. Also do you want it to be faster because it has gotten slower or because you want to run better games? If it has just gotten slower then go to CNET's download.com and download some Malware removal tools to help get your system cleaned up.
Let me know if this helps. This is a starting point.

Memory upgrade

Your computer has memory problems. First check video. If video is working, you'll see an error message. If not, you have a parity error in your first 64K of memory. First check your ram's. Reseat them and reboot. If this doesn't do it, the memory chips may be bad. You can try switching the first and second banks memory chips. First banks are the memory banks that your CPU finds its first 64K of base memory in. You'll need to consult your manual to see which bank is first. If all your memory tests good, you probably need to buy another motherboard.

Or you have bought wrong type of memory for your motherboard.
