Question about HP Broadcom 5751 (DZ556A) Network Adapter

2 Answers

I have a fairly new HP Pavilion notebook (just over a year old) with a Broadcom 802.11 wireless network adapter built in. A couple of days ago my wireless connection just stopped working. Here are some details: - the wireless slider switch on the front of the computer doesn't seem to make a difference: the light remains red (blue signifies a connection) - I've reinstalled the HP Wireless Assistant but it does not show a wireless option in the Network Sharing Center - the Broadcom adapter driver appears on the list of installed programs but does not appear on the list of Device Drivers - I'm using a modem and internet connection from Comcast and a Linksys router. The setup has worked flawlessly for the past year. - the computer has not been dropped, damaged in any way, and rarely leaves the top of my desk -- I'm using my MacBook at the moment. Both it and my iPod Touch connect without a problem, so I'm sure the issue is neither the modem or router. Paul V.

    Let me answer your questions.

When you say the Broadcom wireless adapter doesn't appear on the list of device drivers, do you mean in Device Manager under the "Network adapters" category? Have you tried running "Scan for hardware changes"
(in the Device Manager under the Action menu)?

*Yes, that's correct. The Device Manager does not show the adapter in the NA category. I have not tried running the scan for hardware changes, but will do so.* (see below)

*I can say that under the "Details" for the Broadcom adapter there is a note that the adapter does not have enough "free resources" (Code 12).*

The computer has an Ethernet adapter as well, right? If you connect to the modem using an Ethernet cable (or a USB cable if the modem allows it) you can connect, right?

*There is an Ethernet adapter, but I've never used it for this computer. It's been wireless since day one.*

It sounds like the computer doesn't recognize the wireless adapter at all. Has the computer been taken apart at all recently, either by you or a technician?

*No, I've never had any service done to it, nor installed any new devices. The only peripheral that is connected is a wireless printer, and obviously it won't connect to that either (since it's connected to the Linksys router). So, yes, this may be a hardware problem, since the computer is not recognizing the network adapter*

Jul 05, 2010 - I've run the hardware scan. There are no results of changes.

Thanks. It looks like I may have picked up a virus and need a complete reinstall anyway

Thanks for answering my questions. When you say that you were looking at the Broadcom's "Details" window, where were you seeing that if the adapter isn't showing up in Device Manager? Can you see the Resources tab? If so, are there any conflicts listed toward the bottom where it says "Conflicting device list?" Also, under "Resource type" does it show a memory range and an IRQ?

Can you copy the resources that it shows for the Broadcom adapter and paste them here?

If you can't access the Resources tab, try opening System Information (just type "system information" into the Search bar) and go to "Conflicts/Sharing" under "Hardware Resources."

Have you installed any other hardware recently? It sounds like another dcevice or component has taken some of the resources that should be allocated to the wireless adapter, or a program has released some of those resources.

Wireless network card

Hi there.
The wireless switch on the front bottom of the laptop, it's suppose to be blue when the button is on the right.
Right click on computer and select manage, go to device manager, and go to Network Adapters, try to see a network adapter called Broadcom, if it doesn't appear, it means that your computer doesn't recognize the wireless card and you may have to reinstall the drivers.
Please let me know how you get on.

Good luck

Wireless adapter

check the ettings on the router have not been altered. the chance of 2 wireless cards failing in the same time, on different pcs is very small, more likely the settings that allow connection in the router, the item common to both, have been changed, reinstalling the router has no effect on user settings,
WEP, encryption, MAC controls are all possible suspects, if there has been any change
lock down the router,
many wireless networks are unsecured at the router so that any person driving past can access your router and alter it, default security settings should be changed the day you turn it on
