Question about Linksys Wireless-G WRT54G Router

Network Encryption I have been experiencing problems with my wireless and encryted network. It quit working, I had to reload everything in my laptop. My wireless network currently is not encrypted - here's my question: does an encrypted network protect your personal data more so than a network not encrypted? when you turn off your laptop - are others now unable to hack into your data or only when the network is encrypted or turned off? What is the best way to fully protect myself from theft and sharing my network with friends?

Another thing you can do is use a 3rd party software like NETWORK MAGIC, this software not only sets up wireless printing and shared files it tracks any intrusion onto your wireless network and lets you know if anyone is accessing your wireless and lets you decide through network map to treat any as a threat and not allow access.

Wireless encryption is first and foremost to keep people from accessing your network without your permission. Due to the strength of wireless routers now and days, its like you just turned on a large flood light in home that says "steal my internet connection!"

Yes, it does provide encryption in the transmissions between your computer and the router, but it will not enhance how any web page works or protect your data any better in your computer.

Best suggestion I can make for you is to not only have a wireless password on your router, but to have one one your computer as well. Do not make both passwords match, and do not make them simple or easily guessed. For example, you may want to include numbers and/or combinations of upper and lower case letters (i.e.: FblackDOG78). Furthermore, you want to avoid using common words in your passwords.

The setup wizard does not show the connect button after following the steps. So we cannot connect to the internet using the dlink dir-412 router.

For each PC that needs to connect to the DIR-412 wirelessly, you must ensure that the correct Wireless Network Name (SSID) and encryption key has been entered.
Windows 7 On your computer, go to Control panel --> Network and Sharing Center and Click on "Connect to a Network then select on the Wireless Network Name (SSID) and enter the password/encrytion key.
Windows XP On your computer, go to Control panel --> Network Connection then under the network task pane select View available wireless networks then then select on the Wireless Network Name (SSID) and enter the password/encrytion key.

Wep encryption on WGR614 router

No, WPA is more secure than WEP. Whoever told you that is wrong, its the other way round.

WEP is an older technology of encryption. Some older wireless devices won't work with WPA, but will with WEP. If all you devices can use WPA - then stick with that.

I am having a problem connecting to the internet on my xbox 360. if anyone could help that would be very appcricative

could be you are using too strong of an encrytion, try using a WEP encryption instead of a WPA. If you don't know how to do that , go into your router by typing your IP Address into a web browser usually 192.168. . . . . . then enter the username and password for the router usuaually Admin, Password1. then go to the security tab, and see what your access key is set to.

Need to Change WEP Data Encrytion to WPA in Wireless Network Connection Properties

Hiya, first thing you should check is that your wireless card/usb on your laptop actually supports WPA. I changed to WPA and 3 out of 5 of my laptops could not log on. Took me an age to find out what was wrong. Try changing back to WEP on both units. If they can both log on then see if you can try to borrow a wireless card that you know supports WPA, change back to WPA settings and see if new card works. Don't even assume that new cards/usb's are all WPA compatible. Friends was bought in Nov and isn't able to run WPA.
