Engine starting problem

My Mountfield ride on has been good for years but this year it needed charging. After charging it was fine twice starting ok but third time when turning key, ignition light came on and all I heard was clicking noise but starter would not engage. I charged battery and tried again but the ignition light does not come on and nothing is heard when turning key to start. I took battery to Mountfield dealer and he charged battery and said he thought battery was ok as it warmed slightly when being charged which he said was good sign and he checked charge at full 12v.When I came home I fitted battery back on tried starter, no ignition light and no response when turning key to start. I crossed solenoid terminal and starter turned but it did not fire at all. Smelt petrol but will not fire. I have pedal down on break, seat down, and blade disengaged. I am puzzled. Any advice please.

The battery still may be bad. The fact that it "warmed slightly when being charged" doesn't suggest it to be good - instead it could have high internal resistance in one or more cells. A battery with this failure still measures a good 12V until you put a load on it. I'd take the battery to a battery store, not a lawnmower dealer, and have it tested there with an actual battery tester. If it's bad, replace it. If it's good, then it's probably the solenoid and that means you'll have to replace the starter/solenoid assembly.

Why is the Alternator not charging the battery?

If you're sure the alternator is ok then there is another issue. I would definitely check all the fuses. I would need the make and year to further assist.

First, charge the battery.(Always do the easier things first). If that isnt the problem, take a DC volt meter and check the voltage where the battery connects to the solenoid. Then check the voltage on the starter side, while you turn the key,If there is a large voltage drop, or no voltage, replace the solenoid. If voltage okay, then check the starter. Good luck...Lee

On almost any engine you pull the flywheel and you will see the charging coil. Once out it can be tested by yourself or any competent electrician. Good luck. donnyb60
