Question about Dell Dimension 2400 PC Desktop

1 Answer

Tried to upgrade dell dimension 2400 256 memory cards.

I have two dell dimension 2400's. I tried to replace the two 256 memory cards with 2 512's to upgrade the memory in each computer. They failed to boot up properly. So, I took them all back out and put back in the original 256 cards. One computer boots up correctly and the monitor can read it. The other computer boots up with all lights lighting up green correctly/no beeps on start up, but the same monitor does not read it.
Any advice?
Thanks.

If you do not see any activity and no beeps then the memory module could either be not seated right or was damaged by static. Or you could have knocked something loose (nah that never happens ;-])

To boot and generate a beep code the motherboard needs to see the first 64k of ram. So you can be sure that the problem or part of it will be the #1 memory module. So take it out and reseat it, and then try again. If nothing then swap it's position with the other module and see if that works.

Look around the case and then reseat any connectors. You may need to pull them off and then push them back on to be sure. The heat cycles from the boards running can cause them to work loose and then they just need a bump or a brush to disconnect. On some cases you can do the same just by picking it up by the corners. The case twists and pop.

If nothing is out and it still won;t work your other option is to start swapping parts into the other case to verify they are working.

If none of these get it sorted out then reply here again ( I get message that way) and we can try a few other things. Unless you killed something by a static discharge this is an annoying type of problem, shouldn;t be serious.

Did you add the two sticks with the 512 or remove the 512 and add the two 1gb sticks? Try booting the machine with ONLY the 1gb sticks in.

Your machine supports 1gb modules but they can't be higher than 533MHz. Check that the memory you purchased was either PC3200 (400MHz) or PC4200 (533MHz) and is 1.8v. If you post the part number off of one of the modules I can look it up for you.

Memory upgrade problem

That does not sound like a problem with a memory upgrade. try to unistall McAfee and reinstall. The memory change may have threw McAfee off. Make sure that the ram is also in the right bus. Buses are color coded and the 2 ram stick have to go into the same bus. this can cause problems

Dell has a habit of using proprietary memory in their machines, if it isn't proprietary you can near guarantee that cheaper memory sticks will not be recognised.
Play safe and use the memory configurators at crucial.com and newegg.com
I bought two DDR2 1gig sticks at crucial yesterday for $50.00 for both with free shipping.

Is the video card built into the motherboard? If not you can try replacing just the video card to see if that works. Otherwise I am afraid you may have to replace the motherboard.
