Check the lid switch,if it will not drain and spin, But it could as likely be a timer problem.

Machine just died in middle of cycle. will not

first of all take the waste pipe out from the back of the washer which goes to the outside drainage, make sure you have a bucket to catch all the water that comes out,the lower the pipe the faster it will come out, then you will be able to open the door, and the problem that you have with it stopping in middle of cycle is that the bushes are worn on the motor, these are easy to replace and cost about £10.00

Washer turns on by itself. (Once in the middle of the night)

i have the whirlpool top loader also. Was not quiet a year old, starts running at random by itself. They sent the repair man out got lectured that it was my fault (too much soap, washer is in basement, I need to call an electrician to check the wiring). Now it drips water into the inside of the washer.
I can see it will eventually be cheaper to replace than call the repairman back.... Won't be a Whirlpool

Dryer was working, quit in middle of cycle. Will

It's rather unusual for any internal failure to cause the dryer to just stop in cycle. Check the circuit breaker that supplies the dryer. It should be a double-pole breaker of at least 30 amps. Turn the breaker off and back on to ensure it is reset. Internal causes could be the motor, door switch, thermal safety switch, timer, or a broken wire.

Ran self clean on my oven and it stopped in middle of cleaning cycle

That most likely means there is a fault in the control board. You need to contact the manufacturer or retailer for service.
