Question about Bernina Virtuosa 160

3 Answers

My local repair shops said my Bernina 160 can no longer be adjusted to produce a good stitch, and it would have to be "sent back." Where? It weighs a ton. Do I scrap it?

Get a new technician, preferably a Bernina tech. A proper servicing and your machine can be new again.

I'd just like to echo what you've been told above - all parts for the 160 are still available and if it works, it can be adjusted /repaired to give excellent results. I am also a Bernina tech and am frankly disgusted at the number of so-called sewing machine engineers out there who give people **** advise when their machine goes wrong. I regularly deal with people who put their much-loved non-workers up for sale on eBay and often persuade them to have their machines fixed rather than get a pittance from the very people who are offering the bad advise. As you were told ... find a new Bernina-authorized technician and dont accept this sort of BAD BAD advise that is usually offered simply to try and sell you a new machine.

You have been told a load of rubbish, just about anything mechanical can be put right on any machine despite age, explain in more detail if you can of the exact problem on the machine.

Needle bar won't complete a full rotation, what's the fix?

The basting stitch lockout mechanism is either stuck or out of position.
You can try manually pulling down on the needle bar to see if it will lock back in, but it probably won't. May need to take it to a repair shop.

My mother has a Bernina record machine which has for the last 35 years not worked longer than a metre or so stitching on the most basic stitch without tangling the thread on the bottom spool. It has been...

Try threading the machine with the presser foot up and see if this helps.

When the foot is down during the threading, the thread does not enter the tension control as it should, then when you start to sew, the upper thread has no tension and does not form a stitch with the bobbin thread.

Bernina 1080 stitch length and needle jumping problem

you will most likely find that just adjusting the stitch length and width controls for a while will correct the problem (if the machine has been sitting idle for some time the stepper motor linkages seem to stiffen up a bit but i have good success with continual adjustment until they free-up.

also try switching machine off and on again to ensure it resets correctly.

the combination of both above fixes works 95% of the time - otherwise, as you mentioned circuit board and or stepper motor replacement may be necessary (however if both length and width are playing up it is unlikely to be an electrical fault).

Bernina 930 won't zig zag

You will need to remove the top cover. 2 screws one of which is under the bobbinwinder lid. They only turn a half turn to release. After opening the top cover and if you watch what goes on inside from the top, move the top change lever you will see part of it goes through a fork or U-shape part. This part is probably stuck and needs some oil. After oiling and working it back and forth a bunch eventually it will start snapping into the notches its supposed to. I beleive then you will have your zigzag back.
Either that or you have the stitch width set on zero.
Hope I helped.

Bernina 1008 - tension problems

Make sure the presser foot bar is UP before you thread the machine, otherwise the thread doesn't connect propertly with the tension discs. Top thread should reel-off in clockwise direction.

Programmed stitches on the 160

As a Bernina tech I can tell you to try adjusting the stitch balance with the small knob on the side + or -. Just in little increments until they start to look right. Maybe this has gotten turned too far off. If this doesn't help (50/50), worst case scenario most likely the small gear has been jarred loose or has skipped a tooth to the stepping motor which means a tech will have to reset this and balance it from the inside. There are also steps to take in the service program but again this would be a job for a tech. I suggest you get the whole clean, oil and adjust as this would be included in that.
