I can buy a used white 1620. Will it be able to sew patches on boy scout uniform pockets? If not, what machine features should I look for? Cheers

I'm sorry... It's not the thickness, it's the pockets that I'm worried about.

You should have no problems sewing quite thick fabrics on any machine.

I'm confused about how to sew the pocket to the upper side front confusing, pictures don't help, not clear

Sorry, we can't help since we don't have any pictures or instructions for your pattern. Perhaps searching the internet for now to sew on patch pockets will yield some assistance. Or look for a basic sewing manual at the local library.

Have you lost your manual?
You can download one free from the Singer site.
http://www.singerco.com/accessories/manuals.html
Just type in 1620 and click on search.
Then choose any one of the three options on the next page by clicking free download!
I think for sewing leather or vinyl you need a very thick needle and a teflon foot (the white plastic kind). Tension settings are explained in the manual.
Hope this helps!

Stitches are gathering on backside when sewing on patches

This is caused by a bent needle. Try a different needle that is straight. When they get the slightest bed in them the stitching will end on the back side only
