SOURCE: Broken Glass on Cooktop

Ouch. The glass top does have to be replaced but I just ran the partial model number on your range and if you're at the comp. I hope you are sitting down. Replacing it not bad. Purchasing tho is rediculous. Retail suggested price just for the top is 600.00. Rediculous pricing but GE is like that sometimes. Sorry but repairing the glass is not possible and getting it from a glass shop isn't either. Sorry for the not so good news. Rick

SOURCE: PLES389DCC Frigidaire Electric Range

I just replaced the top it is very easy if you know which screws to take out unplug the stove
LOTs of hidden screws so remember I only had 4 left overs.

First take the knobs off and the 4 black knobs below the real knob

Unscrew the black thing right under the knob this holds down the STEALESS steel cover for all your screws.

then start taking screws out of the fron the top sides and the screws along the oven door.

The screws near the top releases the glass and frame.
MARK COLOR CODE WITH MARKERS OR TAPE BUT DO IT BECAUSE you wont remember like me.

Wires unplug all of the connections that you see, P11 and P13 is where I had my problem they came off. the board eek

Be careful over lable I just exploded my stove when i put it all back together one wire came off I did not lable it.

239.00 for the board 289 for the glass
IF ANY WIRE COME OFF read the ciruit board Schematic

In still workng on my stove I cant believe it blew up the board.

How to lift up glass top for heating element replacement.

Most of these units have a few screws underneath the top at the front lip where the top of the door closes. Remove the screws and you should be able to lift the top up. Most of them also have a metal bar you pull down or up depending on the make and model on the side to hold the top up once you open it

Kenmore 790.9641* free-standing electric range: The "single" (inner) part of the dual radiant element is not working. When the knob is turned to the single side, the ELEMENT ON indicator lights, but

The inner ring or center part of the element is burned out. You will need to replace the entire element, as it is not possible to replace just part of it.

I have a Jenn-Air JES9900 range and the right front burner is not working but the hot indicator light remains on. Is this just a switch that needs to be replaced?

make this test and fix it. God bless you

Surface Element Switch

If the surface element won't work, and there is another element of the same size on the stove, try switching the elements. If it still won't work, the surface element switch is probably defective. The surface element switch can't be tested or repaired, it will have to be replaced.

Surface Element Board

If a surface element won't work the surface element board might be defective. Each burner is switched on and off with the help of a relay on the surface element board. If one or more relays has failed the surface element won't work. If two or more burners fail at the same time, this is likely the problem. If only one surface element won't work and the element itself checks out to be good, the surface element board might be defective.

Coil Surface Element

If the surface element won't work, the coil surface element might be burned out. Most coil surface elements can be pulled out of their socket and checked with an Ohm meter for continuity. If the surface element won't work, check to see if there is any visible damage to the coils. Also, check to be sure the element is pushed all the way into the socket.

Radiant Surface Element

The most common cause when the surface element won't work is the radiant surface element itself. The radiant surface element - or heating element - can burn out similar to a light bulb. If the surface element won't work and it doesn't have continuity, it will need to be replaced. The radiant surface element is not repairable.

Solid Surface Element

If the surface element won't work, and the stove has the solid surface element type of heat, it's likely that the solid surface element itself has burned out. The solid surface element works very similarly to other surface elements - inside there is a heating element that glows when electricity is applied to it. As it gets hotter, the heat is transferred to the solid surface element

Element Receptacle and Wire Kit

If a surface element won't work, there may be a problem in the element receptacle. The surface element plugs onto a terminal block type receptacle. Over time the terminals in the receptacle can have a bad connection and overheat. Look at the receptacle contacts with a flashlight. If the terminals look burnt you will need to replace the element receptacle. also make sure the element prongs are clean and not burnt. If the prongs are burnt bad the element will need to be replaced also.

Loose or Burnt Wire Connection

If surface element won't work, there might be a burnt wire supplying power to the surface element. Sometimes the wire supplying power to the element burns out right near the element itself. Check for this by just looking at the wires leading to the element. If they're burned out it is usually easy to spot.

Incoming Power Problem

Although not as common, if the surface element won't work it is possible that the appliance is not receiving proper voltage. Electric ranges require 220 volts of alternating current. If for some reason the appliance is receiving significantly less, the surface element won't work. Check for proper voltage using a volt meter at the socket where the appliance plugs in.

Broiler does not work, upper heating does not heat for broil or conv broil HES 255U

Well it either has electric or it doesn't. Obviously it isn't lighting up so it is not getting sufficient electric or none at all. Could be a couple of problems, unplug stove from outlet (to be safe) pull out the broiler heating element and inspect for damage if you see none then put it on an ohm tester two leads coming from a multimeter and put it on a scale until you can read it . If you cant its open and needs replaced ,next thing to check is the socket of where it plugs in (the heating element) and see if it looks good. If you feel comfortable you can meter the voltage of the socket to see if it is getting 220 volts with the switch on and powered up (be careful it bites pretty hard!). There also could be a fuse ,the back usually has the wiring diagram on it (inside) so it could be the switch itself or the wiring. A lot of times mice get in there cause of the warmth and chew on wires something to look at as well. There is one last thing to look at and could be the the problem is the thermostat of the element (which keeps the element from overheating) Usually it takes out the element as well but if there is a fuse link in there it saved everything but you need to replace thermostat for the fuse saved the element. Most likely the thermostat or fuse after I think about it but check for the other wiring or switch or socket as well. Good Luck! Be Safe !!!

How to replace the glass for whirlpool oven serial # RPO 713144

This advice is for Electric Ranges equipped with glass smooth tops. If it becomes necessary to replace the cook top due to wear or damage, here's some helpful tips on how to complete the repairs yourself. NOTE: Cook tops are NOT cheap. Prices vary between models, but most are in the $200 to $300 range. With added labor charges, this repair can cost over $600 from an appliance repair company.

WARRANTIES: Most warranties DO NOT cover cosmetics. That is, if your cooktop paint starts to wear off, most manufacturers will not replace it. Warranties also DO NOT cover accidents such as dropping something on the top and breaking it. Warranties DO cover blistering, warping and heat related breakage (if you are using the recommended cookware). This is why it is important to follow all the manufacturer's use and care instructions that come with your range. I know this does not include ALL manufacturers, but this is true with most.

This is a recommended two-person repair job. Please read through the instructions carefully before starting the repairs, and follow any safety recommendations.

1. UNPLUG the range before servicing. There are dangerous voltages still present even with burners turned off.
2. If the old cook top is broken, you will need to get rid of a much of the glass shards as you can and thoroughly vacuum the area around the oven box. Use extreme care when handling broken glass. Wear safety glasses and gloves.
3. There are a few screws located under the front edge of the cook top. You will need to open the oven door to see them. Remove these screws and the top should lift up. If the range is not equipped with any kind of hinge supports, the top will have to be propped up.
4.On some ranges, there is a disconnect plug for the surface element wiring harness. If you have this feature, Follow these steps:

1. Unplug the cook top and leave the elements in place.
2. Place the whole cook top assembly face-down on a soft surface (like some old towels, or a blanket).
3. Remove the surface element assembly leaving all the elements wired together.
4. Place the new cook top face down in the same manner and lay the surface element with wiring harness directly on to it and screw in place.
5. Install the new cook top back on the range and you are DONE.

5. If the wiring harness does NOT unplug, follow these steps:

1. There are a series of screws holding the element assemblies in place. Leave these assemblies wired together for ease of replacing. It is recommended that a second person holds the assemblies in place to support the wires until all the screws have been removed.
2. Lay the intact element assembly, with wires still connected, on top of the oven box. Handle the surface elements with care. They are very fragile. Care also must be taken not to handle the element coils or ceramic material. Try to handle from the underside of the element only. Oil from your hands can cause damage to the element and/or premature failure.
3. If you have to remove the elements, individually, make sure you write down how the wires were connected to ensure you reconnect them in the right order. Make sure you also take note of the numbering scheme on the element and make sure you place the mounting brackets in the same holes that they came out of. Use care when screwing into the new cook top. CAUTION: The screw holes are usually painted and a little force may be required to thread the screws. Do not apply too much pressure on the glass, or you can damage it.
4. Prop the new cook top in place and install the surface element assembly from underneath. A helpful hint: Use some duct tape to hold the assembly until you have screwed it back into place. Don't forget to remove the duct tape when completed.
5. Lower the new cook top into place and secure with screws.
