The long bolt coming down at the end shaft like place reel over bolt then turn back and forth slowly while pushing upward and it should lock in and take knob or bolt at end and tighten to the right.

When looking at the bottom of the trimmer there are two yellow tabs. These are connected to the cover. Push the two yellow tabs in and pull the cover off. You can now see the spool the line goes on . Pull the spool straight out. Feed the new line through the hole in the base of the trimmer. Run the other end through the ridges inside the spool to lock the line in . Continue to wrap the line around the spool. The proper direction should be printed on the spool...mine was clockwise. Replace the spool in the trimmer. Put the cover back on then cut the line. I left enough so the trimmer would properly cut the length. Add power and turn on trimmer.

the spools come with line already installed, they are all for bolens, line is generic, you buy your own line, there are 2 different sizes, and a bunch of types, like round or star, you buy generic line because bolens wont make any money if they sold "BOLENS" line.

If you mean on your weedeater, the bump knob unscrews and the reel then comes out. The bumpknob may have a left-hand thead, and watch the direction the line must be wound. There are usually arrows which show which way the line goes.

Ryobi Trimmer

To install string in the Ryobi you do not have to disassemble anything: Line up the two arrows on the inner and outer reel, remove any excess string, cut two pieces of string about 10 feet, feed line in the side holes, secure line in hole where it comes out the bottom (it only takes about 1/4in. to do so), pull strings tight, then turn the inner reel counter clockwise to wind it. If it sticks a little just pull line a little.
To remove the inner spool in order to remove line that has broken inside, to clean the mechanism, or to perform other maintenance, grasp the outer reel and unscrew the bump knob counter-clockwise. Mine is often very tight and requires pliers to get enough leverage. While you are in there, clean the inner reel and the inside of the outer reel to improve feed performance. The shaft rarely needs cleaning. Do not lubricate. After re-installing the reel, add string (0.080") as described above.
