Not knowing the operating system, In windows 7 and 8 sometimes it forgets the cd format. Then you need to go to the device manager and remove the drive and let windows re-detect it.
This may be caused by bad media, or incompatible formats. There are a variety of media formats for CDs and DVDs. Your reader may not read them all. What model are you running, and what type of media (DVD-R, DVD+R, etc) are you using?
try a different brand, depend on when the CD was made, some of the Verbatim CD are no good for any reader.
the laser in the newer CD or DVD reader is mroe sensetive than before, any defect or coating defect will render the disk unusable.
This happens when the CD or DVD reader goes out. This is a common problem with the CD/DVD combo drives. Usually it's the other way around, about 6 out of 10 times the DVD reader goes out. The drive will need to be replaced in order to fix this.
It is possible that this is a drive issue, I've seen drives that one of the optical reader device has gone out, but generally it'e the DVD reader and will only read CD's. It's very rare that the CD reader goes and the DVD reader works. Before you replace drive, if it's only music CD's (you didn't mention program CD's), then update your media player. If it still won't play, then unistall the media player and completely reload it. At this point you can replacse the drive.
