Have you greased the bearings on the mower deck recently? Is there something jamming the blades?

Remove the deck and see if you can move the blades by hand. If you insist on not removing the deck to do this ... make sure the belt that drives the deck is not on the drive shaft of the motor to prevent accidental starting of the motor and instant mangling of your hand. If you can move all the blades, look for a faulty or worn out pulley on the deck. If the blades are frozen in their bearings, get replacement towers at your John Deere dealer or from a FixYa.com advertiser. If one is faulty or rusted ... replace them all ... as they are probably at or near the same condition. Do this job one time and do it correctly.

First remove your mowing deck and turn it upside down...check to see that you have not run over any wire, bailing twine or that you don't have grass wrapped around the shafts of your blade spindles (the axles that turn your blades) or a bent blade. next try to turn the blades by hand and see if you may have a bad bearing in one of the spindles. if a bearing has gone out the blade will be very hard to turn and you may feel a rough grinding within the bearing or it may be seized completely. if it is you'll have to get a new spindle for your deck. I think the correct John Deere terminology for these are "sheaves"....hope this helps... ;-D

Riding mower won't turn over

Key switch may not be operating the solenoid for the starter. Getting off the seat engages a safety switch that kills the engine go you won't have to go chasing it if it were to slip into gear while you're standing next to it.

Troy bilt riding mower

I would check compression, spark, and fuel. It sounds like you may have low compression and the engine seems to not keep up to the load put on it. If you check the three things I listed it will put you in the right direction. Compression testers and spark testers are available at any local auto parts store. Afetr checking these let me know what you have found and we can go from there. Good luck!

I have a craftsman mower with the B&S 21hp Intek OHV motor, it starts fine but when you go to engage the blade or go forward or backward or release the parking brake it will die unless you disengage...

Check the switch on the seat, of all places. There's a safety switch on the seat that will kill the engine if it's not engaged when do anything other than start and run the engine.

If the switch checks out, get back with me.

When I lower my yard bug mower deck, the engine dies. It runs fine until I lower the deck. Help!!

when the deck( blade) is engaged it puts a load on the engine. that tells me theire is some type of bolckage to the belt/force of the movement and is keeping the engine of moving freely. check to see if there is any blockage of the blades, or the belt is loose or off track.

It could possibly have on of the idler pullies froze up or close to it which will make engine labor hard just trying to make belt rotate.

When I engage the front PTO the engine dies.

There is somthing in the PTO that is binding up. I am assuming the PTO is for the mower blades. The belt(s) could be binding up, not on the pulleys, etc. The blades should turn by hand easily.

Lawn mower died. Pull rope locked up

remove the spark plug and try to pull the rope. Sometimes the coil can get loose and wedge against the flywheel. if that's not the problem then pour a little oile in the spark plug hole, let it set a bit, if it still won't turn over then you have an internal engine problems. Not very common but it can happen
