Question about Kitchen Ranges

2 Answers

We bought a used 4 burner Maytag cooktop that was 5 years old. It worked fine for the previous owner. I pushed down on all 4 burners to make sure they were properly seated. When you turn the knob to the ignite position, the igniter sparks and you smell gas but the burner does not light. If you use a butane lighter at that position it lights. The exception is if the burner is hot. Then the igniter will light the burner.

The previous expert recommended that I look at a website that addressed if you a) don't have gas or b) don't have a spark. I have both but it still doesn't lite unless the burner is already hot (ie have been lit for a minute or two and then turned off and back on).

NO, the response was to a website taht did not address the issue I have.

I know nothing now that I didn't know when I started the process.

You probably have a weak spark module. Use this link to get a tech sheet or repair manual for your cooktop. Maytag Service Manuals

The website that you sent me to gives good information if there is either a) a blockage of gas or 2) no igniter spark. I have both ... but the burner still doesn't light unless it is already hot.

Maytag electric cooktop popping breaker.

The problem is most likely in the element in one of the coils, if they are the tube type and look like pencil thick heating elements, they can develope a short circuit inside them. The actual heating wire is encased with ceramic filler and then put in that tube. The heating wire moves when it gets hot and can work its way to the case and cause a short. Unhook the power from the whole unit and use the meter to check the rersistance of the coils between the heating element and the case

2 burners wont ignite

Hello there:
A burner doesn't work The most common problem for gas surface burners is that they get gas but don't light. This is generally caused by dirt or grease splatters on the burner itself. Residential-grade range/stove burners are round and have small holes around their perimeter to allow gas to flow out and create a round flame. The gas coming from these holes is often ignited by a small vertical row of holes on the side of the burner. If these vertical holes are clogged or obstructed, the gas can't ignite. The solution is to clean the burners thoroughly. Use a toothpick to clear the small vertical holes, then allow the burner to dry completely and try lighting it again. If it doesn't light immediately, either repeat the procedure or call a qualified appliance repair technician.

One burner on gas cooktop fires up but goes tick, tick tick.

There may well be water in the burner. It will evaporate in a day or two. Then it will work fine again.

One burner requires a match to light

had same problem. Used fine sandpaper on the little head (just above the white ceramic) that creates the spark. over the years the edges of the littel metal ring had gummed up but a 1 min sanding got it down to shinny metal and it sparked nicely.

One unit show fault code F153

Hi - I've been having the same problem. GE tech service in St. Louis, MO has been a joke. 1st tech call cancelled 30 minutes before appointment. 2nd tech call to diagnose the F153 code I had already provided when I scheduled service on-line cost $74.95 and the tech didn't have the part on his truck. 3rd tech call a new tech shows up, has no knowledge of previous call diagnosis, opens the box sent to my home by GE and announces that the previous guy ordered the wrong part! We're on the 4th call. My cook top right front burner has not worked for a month. I've contacted GE corporate. The part you need (at least I need) for the right front burner which is a large burner is: WB30T10062. If I knew how to, I'd repair this myself. I don't have the extended warranty. The part is covered because my cooktop is only two years old (parts warrantied for five years) but labor is estimated to cost almost $200....plus the $74.95 "diagnostic" visit. A total rip-off. My advice, if you've got this cooktop, it's still under warranty and you aren't using all of the burners on a regular basis: start using them! The tech guy said most people use that front right burner alot and it eventually malfunctions (code F153). His suggestion was to start using the other burners on a regular basis, too, so that when they go out, at least the part will fall under the five-year warranty! When this cook top is done, I'm going to get a gas stove with "old fashioned burners" and it won't be GE!

Cooktop's electronic igniter started clicking all by itself

Check to make sure your burner caps are aligned. I had this problem, and it turned out one of my burner caps was slightly askew. Putting it level fixed the problem.
