Reference your pressure gauge as the 12:00 position. Going clockwise-
12:00 is Filter, normal running position
2:00 is Waste, water goes from pool and exits the waste line, bypassing filter.
4:00 is Closed, used only when servicing equipment
6:00 is Backwash, reverses water through the filter and goes out the waste line.
8:00 is Recirculate, water bypasses filter and returns to pool.
10:00 is Rinse, water goes through filter and exits to waste line, used briefly after backwashing to clear sediment from filter.
Note that the "pointer," not the handle that you grab, indicates which setting you are on.

How to Choose the Right Swimming Pool Filter?

There is a lot of confusion about various filters, many different opinions, and several important facts to consider. The first is that a pool can be properly maintained with any of the filter systems available: Sand, Cartridge, or Diatomaceous Earth (DE). Here is a brief description of each type:

SAND FILTERS
Water is pushed through a bed of filter sand and removed through a set of lateral tubes at the bottom.
The filter area of a sand filter is equal to the area of the filter itself.
For example, a 24" filter will have 3.14 square feet of filter area. Only the top 1" of sand is actually used to filter the water. The principle behind this filter is that water is pushed through the filter sand, somewhat like an espresso machine. Dirty water goes in the top and clean water exits out the bottom. As the filter sand becomes plugged with debris from the pool, the pressure increases on the filter and the water flow drops. In order to clean the filter, you just run it in reverse and dump the waste water; this is referred to as "backwashing" the filter.

Water is running out the waste valve when the pump is running and filter is set on filter. How can I get this to stop?

You may need to disassemble the top of the multivalve, make sure the handle is 180* to the "Cam"

How to use backwash to waste

When the filter get clogged the pressure in the filter increases and there is less water flow returning to the pool.
If your filter is a sand filter, when you turn the valve to backwash and turn on the pump it reverses the water flow in the sand filter to flush the dirt out of the filter to waste. Look at the window openning in the waste pipe and keep the backwashing goinging until you see clear water.
Then turn off the pump and move the control valve to Rinse, turn on the pump for a few minutes, this returns the water flow back to normal but the water goes to waste to make sure the sand filter is clean.
Turn off the pump and move the control valve to filter and turn on the pump. This mode is the normal operating mode and the pressure gauge in the sand filter will show a drop in pressure.
Some pressure gauge shows a red section to indicate when backwashing should be carried out.

I have a Bosch Exccel 1400 Express washing machine which has given good service now about 5 years old, Last week I noticed a stale smell as I opened the drum after the washing cycle had finished. I am a...

Hi from retired Englishman in SW France @ 21:25 Wed evening.

Someone else had this sort of problem about a week ago.
I asked him the question 'does the drain pipe go into a sink u-tube?'' because water from clothes does not smell, especially after washing and rinsing. Sink water CAN smell, especially if there is a partial blockage/sludge in its u-tube which would be shared by the washer. BTW I believe this was his problem.
There should be water in a (non-sink) washer waste pipe u-tube blocking any smells from the rest of the waste system. I suggest checking the sink/washer waste set-up first.
Also, have you cleaned the lint tray/filter recently? If not it could be a build up of sludge there.
If you unaware of where it is (on our Bosch front loader) it is behind the front lower panel - but before starting-
REMOVE POWER FROM THE MACHINE AND HAVE A WATER RECEPTACLE AND/OR RAGS TO SOAK UP ANY WATER when the filter cover is removed.
One or other of these should cure your problem I would expect.
If you have trouble removing the filter put a comment on this entry and I will receive notification that you have done and get back to you.

Good luck!

My pump is on filter but is draining the water out please help

The water Has to be going out the 'backwash' or 'waste' line.Either that or you have a leak in the plumbing. If the backwash/waste valve is set in the 'filter' position and there is still water escaping through the backwash/waste line, it means that the o-ring or spider gasket needs to be replaced or re-seated. If it is a multi-port valve (one that you spin to select the setting as opposed to a 'push/pull valve) you can try shutting off the pump; do a complete turn, 360 degrees, from the 'filter' setting all the way back to the 'filter' setting. This sometimes helps the spider gasket re-seat

Not filtering, back wash and waste won't work

Try consulting the owners manual for these pool filters. They have a whole section about the different settings on your multi-port valves. It also has a troubleshooting section.

Will get a bad oder from inside if not run daily

Most likely you have an accumulation of waste in the waste pipe or filter that takes water out of the dishwasher to the waste pipe. Check and clean this regularly. In addition, you can buy dishwasher cleaning solutions, which are usually just a small bottle that gets placed int he dishwasher alone and the washer is run through a normal cycle. This helps clean the washer out and deodorizes it as well, however, the odor is probably from a dirty or clogged filter to the waste pipe/tube.

Problem with vari-flo multipoer 1.5 and Hayward DE fiilter

You need a rebuild kit for the valve and possible a sand change. Sand should be changed ever 3 - 5 years or so depending on overall pool conditions.

The gasket inside the valve is out of place and therefore allowing water to leak out the waste port. Use a gokit to replace all the gasket/orings and you should stop the leak.

If the flow is still bad, inspect the sand and change it if necessary.
