I found the user manual at http://www.synapsenow.com/synapse/data/7117/documents/AS3000-5000_UG_ENG.pdf Page 63 of the acer user manual listed these steps for changing the memory: "1 Turn off the computer, unplug the AC adaptor (if connected) and remove the battery pack. Then turn the computer over to access its base. 2 Remove the screws from the memory cover; then lift up and remove the memory cover. 3 (a) Insert the memory module diagonally into the slot, then (b) gently press it down until it clicks into place. 4 Replace the memory cover and secure it with the screw. 5 Reinstall the battery pack, and reconnect the AC adaptor. 6 Turn on the computer. The computer automatically detects and reconfigures the total memory"

The standard drive in the 2310 seems to be a Matshita U3-840D, which is a basically a piece of rubbish. I did what paella recommended, and the drive pulled out without much trouble, but has a small plastic flap attachment at the back which is evidentally a panel for the screw which holds the drive in place (this was split when I pulled out the drive... which makes me wonder whether a replacement will be all that easy to push in without opening up the entire unit and removing, then replacing, the existing screw. I'd recommend opening the laptop first if possible, and removing the screw at the back of the drive which keeps it in place before pulling it out.

Sounds like the bios flash has failed, the only thing you can do now is try to flash again, make sure you have the right bios update for that model machine, suggest you get a USB floppy drive so you are able to re-flash the bios, if it still doesn't work then the machine is rendered useless.
Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!!

Very carefully, 1-push the screen right back holing the hinges where tey should be, 2-you have to unclip the black panel (over the power button) using an old credit card so yo dont damage the plastic, as this panel loops over the hinges & can only be removed with the screen right back, BUT remember to be carefull as the cables run through the blak covers & you don't want to snag them!
I've done this before so don't be afraid to pull hard start at the edges & make sure when aclip releases not to carry on pulling (use your thumb on the base of the comuter whilst pulling, dont just rip em off as you'll crack the panel quite easy.
but first I'd see if you can get replacements they're only aluminium angle plates with 2 screws holding them to the base.
Hope tis helps!
