Question about Computers & Internet

Advent 7084. Tried to change back to XP from Win7. Reformatted HD but install did not complete. Now machine will not run after Intel splash screen. I have tried pressing F10 repeatedly after switching on. I tried taking the battery out and putting it back in whilst holding ON button. I tried Recovery disc, it just does not respond. Any ideas will be great......JAY

I wanted to clean install XP. I put the disc in and followed the instructions to reformat the hard drive and install. After it finished copying XP files it tried to restart. Now it does nothing except show the Intel Centrino splash screen. Thank you

Did you use the Advent's built-in reformat and rebuild to get it back to XP Pro?

If you have a separate XP Pro CD or DVD, as opposed to that in a 'hidden' partition on the HD, your best best, so long as you have the installation key, is to start fresh with formatting the HD and, if it is large enough, splitting the HD into two partitions.

Then use one of them for the actual XP Pro partition. Build that first partition into XP Pro, and when it is working properly, only then do you format the second partition, and make it into the kind of space you need it to be.

You should have the ability to make it work now. So long as you have a legitimate installation key for XP Pro, you should be able to make this work properly.

Thank you for the help but the problem was a faulty hard drive. I have changed it and it is running okay now.

Hi i have also the same problem with my advent milano when i boot the note book up it starts as normal then goes straight to the blue screen and i cant seem t get it in safe mode at all it jst goes...

If there is a very important info inside.
Take a HD and connect it to other machine as a secondary disk.
Take a backup.

Then take a Operating system CD/DVD and make a new installation - There is a small change to get it fixed by installing it in repair way. But nothing can beat clean installation if it's possible. You will get much faster machine that way.

I am running win 7 & when tried to install xp its showing compatibility problem . pl reply

Remember.... the OS compatibility is only lower to upper...not upper to lower....i.e.....
Win7 is higher than WinXP....so u cant run / install WinXP using Win7...but u can do the otherway round....i.e...1st u can install WinXP in C: drive, then let the machine start, once u get to WinXp dekstop then install Win7 in D: drive...(it's called Dual Boot)...so on the boot screen u can choose which OS to work with when the PC starts....
all the best
pls revert back...and kindly leave a rating and feedback to this solution...it will help me become a "Guru" here on Fixya....

Ask me if you still don't get what I mean..

Windows won't boot after an OS upgrade

The board is probably good but I've seen this many times when folks try to upgrade old computers. The drivers included with XP aren't working on your machine. It's not working with W2K because when you formatted the HD with XP it removed the IBM label from the HD. You should use your recovery disks to restore the drive.
