Hi

  • Decide which hard drive will be the startup (master) drive. If this drive was the startup drive previously, or if it's a new hard drive, then the master drive designation will already be set.
  • Step 2 To change the designation of a new drive to be a slave drive, skip to step 4.
  • Step 3 To change the designation of an existing drive to be a slave drive: Turn off the computer, unplug the power cord, remove the drive from its drive bay, and disconnect the drive from its power cord and ribbon cable.
  • Step 4 Check the hard drive documentation or the label on the drive itself for master/slave jumper settings.
  • Step 5 Find the jumpers on the circuit board of the drive. Jumpers are plastic plugs with metal sleeves that form a circuit between a pair of pins. Jumper locations are labeled on the board with a J followed by a number (such as J20).
  • Step 6 Use tweezers or very small pliers to remove or reposition the jumpers to the configuration shown in the documentation or on the disk label.
  • Step 7 Install (or reinstall) the hard drive in the computer. (See "How to Install a Second Hard Drive.")

Im just wondering why i might need a slave drive, i have a 80 gig master and a spare 80g drive should i put them both in or does it realy matter

slave drive is very handy in backup files you can store data and other software and drivers. it does matter becouse master drive always has the operating system that the virus and error always happen. hard drive with IDE connector has two jumper setting slave and master. connected to IDE cable. sata disk has no master slave..

Want to install wd1200jb-75cra0 as slave drive in dell xps420 with vista operating system operating master drive. do i need a driver installed first before it will recognize the wd1200 as a slave?.

there is a jumper setting on the drive itself that determines master and slave. Look closely at it, there is always a diagram of the pins to connect or disconnect for master slave setup.

No longer needed with Sata drives...

What happen if i dont put jumper in a hard a hard drive?

If you don't put jumper in harddrive is detects it as cable select means if you connect your harddrive to middle socket of ide cable and then it detects it as slave but if you connect it at the end of ide cable it detects as slave. But make sure that otehr device is not set as master only 1 device is set as master or slave .

Won't see the dvd drive I installed

No, the slave/master settings are for hard drives. You need to install the CD that came with the DVD- it will have the drivers on it that you need. If you don't have the CD, you can google your dvd make and model number with the word "driver" after it, and sometimes you can find free downloads, and others you have to pay for. Try the CD that came with the DVD first, that's your best shot. Hope this helps.

I have a 91 nissan d21 and cnt find the slave cylinder or master slave cylinder?

The master is beside the brake master cylinder, between the brake cylinder and the fender. Follow the line down to the trans, it ends at the slave. Now that you know where they are... why do you want to know??

Iam having a problem getting the two flash units to sink. I have set the parameters by the book for the master and the second the slave. They are both on the same channel. They are both on the ETTL mode....

Make sure the slave is far enough in fornt of the master flash to see it. If the two flashes are next to each other then the slave is not seeing the master signals.

I installed an additional hard drive in my laptop. The computer will no longer boot up. I've read the the BIOS needs to be changed by I don't know how.

Please tell me which Motherboard your system has???
If you have added an additional drive, check whether you have set the jumpers right for master/slave/cable select configuration.

If you bios setup to boot up from first HDD, then the bootable HDD shall be in master mode. Configure bootable HDD as master & additional one as slave.

If still no luck, Put this additional HDD on other IDE slot.
    Tell me if this works...

    Free driver schematics

Put the jumpers on both the drives to CS(cable selct) then the master will automatically be the one on the end of the ribbon cable and the slave will be the one on the middle connector of the ribbon.
