Sounds like the unit may be Short on refrigerant, the frost can be sign the refrigeration is taking place on the pipework between the indoor and outdoor unit and not on the internal coil (evaporator indoor unit)

Due to the many different questions I see about Air Conditioning, I am including this overview to help us better understand each other for trouble shooting. A basic air conditioning system has a Thermostat, Air Handler or Furnace Fan and a Condensing unit. In a split system, the condensing unit (Condenser) is separate from the furnace and usually in the back yard. When working properly, it blows hot air. It connects to the cooling part of the system by 2 copper lines. One large line and 1 small line. The part that cools the house is the "Evaporator" and is usually on top of the furnace inside the square metal box (Plenum). When the Air Conditioner is running, the large copper line should be cold and the smaller line should be warm. Common signs of low refrigerant are that both lines are the same temperature and/or frost or ice has built up on the large line at the condenser. The thermostat will normally display room temperature on till it is touched to change the setting. It could have a "Span" setting as well as times and temperatures. The operating "span" of MOST residential thermostats is 40 to 90 degrees. That means you can set it as low as 40 degrees and no higher than 90 degrees. It probably has a fan switch also. When in the "ON" position, the fan will run constantly, 24 / 7, but the condenser will still cycle on and off as needed to keep the house at set point. The air conditioning fan outside the house is showing frost on the coils, what is the problem


Are you using your Air conditioner as a Heat Pump (Making heat in the house)- or as an Air Conditioner (making COLD air in the house.)

If as a heat pump, then remember-- that the WARM coil is now inside the house-- and the COLD one is outside-- So, if it is COLD outside, there is not enough HEAT out there, to keep the coil from going below freezing-- The unit may have to be turned off, and allowed to defrost, if you want more heat from the Heat Pump-

If you are referring to the outside unit freezing up, the issue is in the defrost cycle. The defrost cycle works something like this: The unit reverses the flow of freon causing the inside coil to blow cold air into the conditioned space and the outside coil is now working like an a/c unit, it gets warm to melt the frost/ice. The inside unit electric heat strips come on so you do not notice the cold air being blown in. The fan on the outside unit stops running to allow the coil to get good and warm.
Now the unit should go into the defrost cycle every 90 minutes or so. It should not terminate the cycle untill the coil is clear of frost. There is an "Klixon" type termostat that measures the temperature of the outside coil. This is most likely the problem. It is prematurely terminating the defrost cycle. I'd start there first.

well there not enough data here to make a fairly good solution. but if all the fans are running! and no cool air then it is the compressor.

unit is freezing up because it either has too much freon or not enough. the pressure should be checked on both the low and high sides and corrected.

A/C does not blow cold air. It has frosting built on the pipe that connects to the a/c unit outside. There is some water built up where the filter sits. I turnd off the a/c for a full day, the frost...

Most likely you are low on freon. Your air conditioner uses a coil that gets cold when the freon passes through it to produce your cooling. The temperature of the freon inside the coil is directly controlled by the pressure of the freon. When the system is low on freon, it causes the coil to become to cold and then instead of sweating it freezes. You will need an a/c technician to reslove the problem for you as the task requires tools and equipment that you most likely don't have.

Outside makes loud noise


I would take a very close look at every solder joint there is between the inside unit and the outside. If you observe oil at any point it indicates a leak at that point. That is an expensive price for what you say was done. Check your invoice for the amount of refrigerant they or he added to the system. Compare it with the amount stated on the outside unit nameplate. Check for frost on the suction (big line) by the outside unit. If there is frost your coil is frozen up. If this is the case turn the fan on and the cooling off. Allow it to run in this manor for about an hour to defrost the A coil. Then return to the cooling mode.

If it is the larger of the two lines check your filters in your inside unit. Also check to see if the fan is blowing. If both of these are ok most likley you are low on refrigerant.

Compressor lines


If the large line returning to the compressor is frosting you don't have enough air circulation. Check air filters on inside unit.
