Question about Pentair Minimax Ch 400,000 Btu Propane Pool Heater Millivolt Ignition

1 Answer

I just cleaned my jets on my purex mini max plus 400 heater. It is heating great now but has black smoke coming from the top. I think it is rich and is getting too much gas. Is there an adjustment or do i need a new gas switch?

First have you always had this connected to propane? There are different models for natural gas and for propane. If you connect a natural gas to propane the "jets" are way too big for propane. How did you clean the jets? IF you "drilled" them out they may be too large now. If you have adjusted the gas regulator, decrease gas pressure. I believe this unit has a combustion blower, be sure it is debris free on inlet and in fan, check for leaves. Make sure black smoke is not coming from debris built up inside of heater. Here is a link to a location for the complete manual for your heater:

When I turn my mini max plus 400 heater on it clicks then nothing happens, what's up with that

If it is clicking it is trying to fire (calling for heat). This indicates that the internal safety loop Tstat, and IID are working. It is either a bad gas valve, your ignition wire, or lack of gas. If the gas line had been open for servicing for any length of time it can take a while for all the air to get out. Best call out a tech to do the repair, you are literally playing with fire.

Black soot like smoke coming out of top of pool heater,

Your flames should be blue; orange means a poor combustion mixture. Pull the copper jets out of the manifold one at a time and inspect the inside for spider nests. They are screwed into the black tube that exits your gas valve, bends down and then along the front of the burner tubes. You will likely find most of the jets blocked. If they are not or you still have a problem after cleaning them out, you'll need a tech to measure the gas pressure in and out of the gas valve.
