Question about JVC Televison & Video

JVC D-Series TV too dark

I have a JVC D-Series 32 inch desk top TV - not a thin one, not plasma or HDTV - about 5 years old. This has been a GREAT TV but the last several months the picture has become dark. No amount of setting adjustments - picture, color, bright, detail, temperature, game mode, theater mode, standard mode, or TV mode - nothing alleviates this. Don't know what we did with our manual but the warranty has surely expired and the Good Guys went out of business. Going to buy a HDTV soon and put this in spare bedroom - OR should we give away? It has great sound and works great, except for this issue. Is there some way to say replace lamps inside it or some such? Thanks in advance.

Well, it certainly was informative. It fleshes out what I have been finding thru online searching in regards to the tube life span, though it isn't the answer I wanted. Good "lifesaving" info though. Thanks very much.

Okay, I answered the answer (LOL) but I see no indication that it - my answer - appeared, so I'm just adding a comment to say thanks for the quick response. It is greatly appreciated even though not the answer I was hoping for. Happy 4th of July and thanks again.

The cathodic tube has aged and it's starting to show that - 5 years is about the overall lifetime expectancy of a CRT tv of that size so i should say that it's time for a new one.
You can't replace the tube - it's no longer in production but you could force it to give the same image as before for a few months more. You have to raise the acceleration of the electron gun by raising the voltage and for that all you need to do is to adjust a potentiometer. The problem is that you must do that with the tv working and the voltage there is over 1000 volts, easily large enough to kill you, and if you go over the limit the tube will be seriously damaged.
My opinion: keep the tv as is as long as you can use it comfortably then junk it.

Lcd tv has black cloudy line from top of screen about 1 inch wide and 4-5 inch long down the screen

This problem is not just for Philips. I've found similar complaints online for JVC, and my Vizio 32" LCD has the same problem. In my case the TV is about 3 years old and has a lot of hours on it.

Current value of a jvc 32 inch color tv 8 years old

The street value would be 100-150 dollars. If TV is a cheap model or abused or very used, you should pay less.
Consider a Sony or a Toshiba in tube style since all are cheap now.

LG Plasma Problem

This could be the main drive board failed, or the plasma display backplane has a defect. These types of repairs are generaly fairly expensive.

I would be considering to get an estimate just in case it is simple fault. But, if the repair will cost more than a few hundred dollars, I would strongly suggest a new set. Also, servicing an older set is a gamble in case something else will soon fail.

Jvc 32" has grouping of thin white lines at top of picture extending 4" down from top of frame

It sounds like you have a bad capacitor in the vertical circuit. The circuit needs to be checked out by a technician. Stargazer
