If they freeze up and stay that way, you have a refrigerant leak. Time to replace the unit. This is rather common, as the water condenses on a steel part, which will corode. (they don't make them out of stainless steel, so they will be able to sell more at a cheaper price, rather than a few which would last 10 x longer. Unfortunately, they basically all made that way.)

My Santa Fe RX runs for about 1/2 hr. The accumulator gets cold and than warm. Compressor & fan run. Humidity is set to max. No water is ever collected (I monitor the pump reservoir).I have removed the...

Are you keeping all of the metal covers in place while the machine is running? If you remove some of the metal covers, the fan may not move the air through the dehumidifier as intended.

If the compressor runs (with all of the metal covers in place) and the accumulator does not become cold, there are a few things that may be affecting your dehumidifier.

1. low refrigerant charge - you may have a refrigerant leak.
2. blocked capillary tube or broken expansion valve.
3. blocked air filter prevents enough air from moving through the dehumidifier.

Kenmore 580.53701300 dehumidifier freezing cooling fins

Hi,
Yes, it is a sealed system and it seems as though you may have a leak....unfortunately it will be cheaper to buy new then to fix.

Here is a tip that I wrote to help people to figure out what is going wrong with their dehumidifier2_bing.gif.

Dehumidifier is running but no water is in bucket

No water in bucket

possible that the cooling fins have frosted over...this happens when a cold surface appears in a humid room that does not have enough heat to prevent the freeze-up on the fins. If you look at the fins (above the water bucket), you may see the frost. One solution is to turn up heat in room, followed by placing a fan to blow air through fins if still frosted. If you do not have a frost problem, then ensure compressor is running. If comp is running, then return dead unit.
