If you have files that you can't loose and the damage to the file system isn't that great you can use a Linux Live-CD to make a backup of them: go here http://pclinuxos.com/ and download the iso of the OS; burn that to a disk and boot from it ; now copy all your files to an external memory (or burn them to a dvd).
Once all your files are recovered boot from a generic (not recovery) disk of the same type as your OS (XP Home or Pro) and perform a Repair install if possible - this way all your files and programs will not be lost. If that fails then your only path left is a simple reinstall - boot from your recovery disks and reinstall XP.

If you get reboots even in Safe Mode then Windows is truly corrupted, nothing you can do will save it. Just recover your files and reinstall.

Hi Crrllupton,

This behavior may occur if Symantec Corporation's pcAnywhere software was installed on your computer before you upgraded to Windows XP.
This version of pcAnywhere may not be compatible with the Windows XP upgrade. Versions of pcAnywhere earlier than version 10.5 are not compatible with Windows XP. This issue has also occurred with version 10.5 505 of pcAnywhere.
Please contact Symantec for compatibility information.

To resolve this issue, remove pcAnywhere from your computer. For remote desktop access, consider using Windows XP's Remote Desktop.

To remove pcAnywhere from your computer, follow these steps:

  • Restart Windows in Safe mode.

  • Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.

  • In the Add or Remove Programs dialog box, select pcAnywhere in the list ofCurrently installed programs, and then click Change/Remove.

  • Follow the on-screen instructions to remove the program.

  • Restart Windows in normal mode.

Thanks for using Fixya...
Good luck and have a nice day.

Will i be about to use with both my laptop running Windows 7 AND my desktop running Windows XP? is making a seperate folders for each computer enough?

Yes, because boyj Windows xp and windows 7 utilize the NTFS file system. If it was windows 2000 or earlier, they wouldn't, as they would have different file systems. NTFS versus FAT32 for the older operating systems.

Acer Desktop Veritron M460 will not load Windows XP or Vista!

This problem may occur if the Ntfs.sys file is missing or becomes corrupted when you convert your hard disk to NTFS To resolve this problem, replace the missing or corrupted Ntfs.sys file:
  1. Use the Windows XP startup disks or the Windows XP CD to restart your computer.
  2. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to select the To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R option.
  3. Type the number of the Windows installation that you want to access from the Recovery Console, and then press ENTER.
  4. Type the administrator password when you are prompted, and then press ENTER. If no administrator password exists, just press ENTER.
  5. At the command prompt, type the following commands (press ENTER after each command): cd \windows\system32\drivers

ren ntfs.sys ntfs.oldNote This step renames the corrupted Ntfs.sys file to Ntfs.old. If the Ntfs.sys file is not found, the file is missing.
  6. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: copy cd:\i386\ntfs.sys drive:\windows\system32\driversWhere cd is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive that contains the Windows XP CD, anddrive is the drive where you installed Windows XP.
  7. Remove the Windows XP CD from your CD-ROM drive, type quit at a command prompt, and then press ENTER to quit the Recovery Console.
  8. Restart the computer.I hope this helps. The other thing I can think of is maybe your harddrive needs a raid driver. If this is a sata drive and an old version of you os,the sata driver may not be already on the disk and you will have to insert one.Let me know if the first solution works,if not we can try the raid driver.

Set-up recognize my hdd but windows doesn't

Windows uses NTFS file system.

you need to enter a boot disk/recovery disk/windows xp disk into your CD drive and in the system BIOS select the CD drive to boot first. Once the CD has loaded you can re-format your HDD to NTFS and re-install windows

You will, however loose all your data but your HDD will function again with windows

Mac not recognizing External Western Digital HD.

the problem is that your western digital operates using the NTFS (New Technology File System) which is the standard file system of Windows. Apple macs is not interopable with native NTFS therefore you need to install a read-write NTFS file-system driver on your mac.

an excellent free mac NTFS driver can be found here-
http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/NTFS-3G.shtml

download and install the software then restart your mac.

I have been having a problem lately with my desktop pc,windows xp

Try running the system in VGA mode.
I assume this is a windows machine.
So hit f8 just before the loading Windows screen comes up. and choose Safe mode .
Then set your video card properties to VGA and reboot, that should get you back into windows.
once in, reload your video card drivers.
All should be good...
