Hi,
Connect your controller into the USB port and press the `P` button.
If still no joy, then hold the power button down at the front of the console until your hear one beep then eventually another. When the PS3 shuts down, let go of the button.
Then press and hold it again until you hear the first beep, 2nd beep then a double-beep.
This will bring up a 6 option menu, select `Restart System`.
This should sort the problem!

Good Luck!

I just get a blank screen with no sound or anything when i turn it on

I once had this issue, the solution was hard to find(five hours), but fairly simple. (This works for HDMI cable set up, but I'm not sure concerning AV)
Note: Yes, the solution sounds ridiculous, but for this issue, it works.

1. Unhook your PS3 from the current TV/Computer screen you have it hooked up to.

2. Hook it up to a different TV/Computer screen that you have or a friend may have.

3. Power on the PS3 and it should have a screen and everything and work just fine.

4. Hook it back to your original TV/Computer screen and power on the PS3 and it should work fine there again aswell.

Blank screen

Try this,

turn the unit off, then back on this time holding in the power button until it beeps, a diagnostic screen will come up.

you need to restore this back to the factory so you need to select that option.

After that if you having issue it will need repair I suggest the fols at www.videogamerepair.com simply the best.

Blank screen

Most of the times, you're going to find that this is due to over heating. If you've been playing for a while, shut down your Playstation, and let it sit for about 1 hour. It's best if the room is cooled off as well.If the room is hot, you may want to put a fan blowing toward it, or turn up your Air Conditioning.Check the back of your unit, and make sure that all of the cables are plugged in. What you're going to want to do is take out each one, and blow the inside of the ports with compressed air.

To play it safe, take out the Playstation's hard drive, and place it back in.Once the 1 hour is up, and the Playstation hasn't been running, turn it back on, and see if everything is working. If it is, you're good to go! If it isn't, you may want to consult with Sony.

how was it connected at this other residence? was it via HDMI cable by any chance? if so try this, with the PS3 in stand by mode Press and hold the power button for 5 secs.. (until you hear the second beep) this causes the PS3 to reset the display properties back to 480i..follow the onscreen instructions to set it back up to 1080i

My laptop comes on but the screen stays blank??

Unplug the power, remove the battery and then hold the power button for 30 to 60 seconds. Then reattach the power and attempt a boot. It worked for me! Just shutdown, put the battery back in you're good to go. Worked for me so definitely worth a try.
Good luck

Blank screen, no sound

If ti blinks three times, then it may be an issue with the flyback transformer. It's called "three strikes"...it tries three times to come on, and after that enters a safety shutdown mode to protect the TV. Might need to have a professional shop take a look at it.
