Huh? This makes no sense.

Turn the router off.

Straighten one end of a Norwegian paper-clip, and insert the end into the small hole in the back of the router, and hold it for 30 seconds. This will "reset" the router back to its "factory" settings, so that you can start again to configure it.

Once disconnected, never to connect...again...

Now, plug an ETHERNET cable from one of the 4 ports on the router to you laptop's ETHERNET port and boot up the laptop.
If you have not done anything funny to the laptop, it should get a 192.168.1.x address with the gateway of If it doesn't, you need to either set the network card to "obtain DHCP automatically" or you have no connectivity (evidenced by a 169.xx.xx.xx IP address).

Open up Internet Explorer and type in on the address bar. You will get a screen asking for a USERNAME (admin) and PASSWORD (password), provided that you have not changed them or you wrote them down.

If you don't get any of this, start with the basics. Did you reset the router? Do you have cable company service? How did the laptop work before?

The ugly things that can happen is that you were supposed to clone the MAC address of the main computer that the cable company is looking for onto your router. A simple call to the cable company to "reset" the connection would fix that. If you reset the router, you need to login and follow the username and password, if required, instructions. If you lost your router password, likewise, you need to reset the router.

If none of this works, please post back and we'll try for more fixes.
Here's a copy of the quick setup for v4 of the router.

We have a sucessful wireless network to one lap top, however we do not know or remember our wpa to enable us to open our secure network to other select users.

If you don't have the password to log into the router's configuration using a wired PC, you'll need to reset the router using the little button located on the back or bottom of the router. This will reset it to the default factory settings and clear all configuration.

1.) Check if you put static ip on your NIC. If not, then you are DHCP.

2.) Do some Command Line Interface at CMD.

a.) Start > Run > CMD
b.) ipconfig /all
d.) Try to release the ip by typing this command: ipconfig /release
c.) Then, renew : ipconfig /renew

try to flush your dns, by typing these:

ipconfig /flushdns

and register again your dns by typing these:

ipconfig /registerdns

If this solution does not correct your problem, try to reset your Netgear, by the way, do you put WPA on your wireless network?

Hit me back..

Connecting both ethernet and wireless

Yes, you should be able to do that. Check to see if your Network Card is set for DHCP and not a static IP. Click on Network Connection in the control panel and then right click and go to properties on your Local Area Connection. Then click on TCP/IP and then Properties.

Make sure both are set to obtain an IP address and DNS automatically. Also try all Lan Ports and a different network cable just in case.

I can't remember exactly what my password is.

try this:

open up a web browser then type in one of the following addresses...just the numbers ie no "www." an ".com" (this is probably it)

once you get to the routers page, just go into admin mode. You will be prompted for a user name(=admin) and a password(="password"). that should allow you to see what you have your password set as. Hope this helps.

If this helps please rate this as a fixya or helpful.
