It depends.

If you did a "full" format, i.e., writing "zero" data-bytes over every block on the volume, your files have been overwritten.

But, if you did a "quick-format", i.e., replace the Table Of Contents by a "blank" page, then all the other "pages" in the volume are still stored on the drive.
Search online for "File Scavenger" type of software, which linearly reads through the volume, and tries to "stitch" together the blocks into files.

Hi I have a 2tb ext hard drive which was working fine on my soniq tv. Somehow the tv formatted/reformatted the hard drive and now none of the files work.. can't even read any of the file headings as they...

I have to ask, why would you connect a Computer hard drive to a television?

Remove the hard from the television and connect it to a computer. The hard drive hasn't been reformatted, because you can see the folders. If it reformatted it would be blank. With the hard drive in a hard drive enclosure and connected to a computer, you can try and read the data and find out why the filenames were altered and bring them back. I am guessing the file associations have been lost, or the file extension has been altered. There is also Undelete software you can use as well as diagnostic software.

Hard drive does not recognize a file system

Buy a software called EASUS DATA RECOVERY WIZARD, install it on a working computer. Connect your hard drive as a slave and open the program. Use the Complete Recovery Method to recover all your files. It is usually pointless to try and recover system files. Unless you want to recover your documents and files that were there in the hard drive.
