Congratulations on switching to mac!plug the external hard drive back into the PC, and copy the photo's to the PC, now plug it into your mac and go to applications-utilities-disc utility, the external drive should be listed on the left, click on the erase tab, at the volume format select "ms-dos file system", then click the erase button, this will erase everything on the drive and set it up so your mac can use it (but its ok because you moved all your pictures to the PC) now you can go back to the PC and copy the pictures on the external drive and it will work with your mac.

The 5v power pin on the AC adapter of my SmartDisk Crossfire external hard drive has been broken. How do I get a replacement AC Adapter?

Take your SmartDisk to any computer-store.

They can open the case, remove the disk-drive,
and mount the disk-drive in a new "empty" external casing,
with a new power-supply.
See: http://www.canadaram.com/3_5_sata_enclosures.htm
for a sample of various "empty" cases, for about $30.

I've had my Crossfire 160 for a year or so. It's

New sounds coming from a harddrive is a very bad sign. I couldn't determine if the Crossfire has a little fan in the enclosure to help keep it cool; if so maybe you are lucky and only the fan is making noise.

If there is nothing in that case other than a harddrive that has just begun this new behavior of clicking, then it is time to back it up and not trust it anymore. One day it will stop working altogether, or worse start causing data loss randomly and intermittently.

I would keep using it, but stop trusting it.

SmartDisk Crossfire Desktop Drive

Usually this is a problem with the usb port not being able to supply enough power to the drive. Often, units like this will come with two usb plugs on one cable to increase the current supplied to the drive. If the drive has an input for external power (some do, some don't), then using external power would help.

try turning the external drive off & wait a minute then turn it back on.if it works just drag what you want to transfer from your mac to the external drive and it should copy it to the drive.

Crossfire 160gb external hard drive.

If the drive was formatted in a newer windows OS and it is the NTFS file system, the Mac OS will only have read access. You can check this by plugging it in and checking the properties. To solve this you can copy your stuff off and reformat in the FAT32 format, you will only lose the security features that NTFS offers.
