Cannot connect laptop to desktop - Office Equipment & Supplies

If you connected the desktop with a hardwire connection (ethernet cable or usb cable) and the laptop is connected wirelessly, then the Desktop needs to be "awake" for the laptop to print. What I did was connect the printer to the network with an ethernet cable to the router, either wireless router or standard. Then you have a seamless connection for both computers independent of each other.

No. But in this case you probably have to type in the wep key into your laptop again.

Do you need to see the desktop or just share folders from each other? If the latter then you need to do the following:

Use Windows Explorer and select a folder you want to share. Right click and select sharing and security.

On the sharing tab click on Share this folder. Enter a share name ( I like to enter the PC name _folder name; Rick1_Downloads)

Click on Permissions. If your ok with everyone using the PC's and Laptops having access then highlight Everyone and click on Full Control.

Do this on each PC and Laptop.

That should be it or darned near close.

Sorry, there's no way to port the keyboard out of laptop. You could connect your desktop monitor to your laptop.

Try logging into the router with your desktop hard-wired and find the 25-digit passcode and use that to log on to the wireless network with the laptop. If not, then check if connection is good by hard-wiring the router to the laptop. Let me know what happens or if you have solved the problem.

Make sure both computers can share files and can ping each other, if not, it's just a firewall issue. Try to disable your firewall first.

I have the same problem. Startign this morning, when I connect modem directly to desktop, it works. But when I connect modem to this router and then connect to desktop, nothings works.

again - if connect modem back to desktop directly, then it works!.

what is the issue.....? not able to figure it out.

I did reset, change router IP etc etc everything nothing resolves the core issue!

Ignore the desktop pc
check the wireless security settings in the unnamed router and make certain that the non-connecting laptop has the same settings.

Have you checked to make sure the laptop wireless NIC isn't acting as an AP by mistake? That could explain both desktop and laptop connectivity issues. Just a thought.

Sounds like you are setup to use Internet Connection Sharing. don't do this. Have each computer connect to the internet via the router. If the router is wireless connect all computers wirelessly to the router that are wireless capable and any computers that are not wireless capable, connect them to the router via a cat5 cable to the cat5 ports on the router. This will solve your problem. BPCS
