Question about Frigidaire FMV157GM Microwave Oven

1 Answer

We were just sitting at the dinner table while heating something up in the microwave and the exhaust fan turned on all by itself. When I tried to turn it off, it wouldn't. I unplugged it, let it sit for a minute, then plugged it back on. The fan was still on and couldn't be turned off. I am not sure why this happened.

Hello,

You probably have either a shorted base thermostat on the base of the chassis of the oven or a shorted fan relay on the control circuit board.

The base thermostat (which I believe has thinner pink and yellow wires attached, but not thicker black wires) should read normally open. If it shows continuity (virtually zero ohms or shorted) then it is bad.

Check the above stated to see where the problem lies and fix it.

Take care.

I actually found the owner's manual and it said that it was a safety feature. The fan comes on when the microwave oven is getting too hot--and we had microwaved quite a few things. After it cooled off, I plugged it back in and it was fine. The microwave is only 15 months old so I was hoping that nothing was seriously wrong!

Have Kenmore microvave and the vent starts on its own

Actually, that's a feature! If you cook much on the range (stove) beneath the microwave, the heat will cause the microwave bottom to heat up quite a bit (just touch it!), and the microwave will turn on it's exhaust fan in an attempt to save itself from burning up. It will shut off in about 15 minutes after you turn off the source of heat.
But if the fan comes on by itself even when the microwave is cool (or at least not hot), then you probably have a defective fan thermostat. This thermostat is located behind the control console on the inside bottom of the microwave.

We changed the charcoal filter & reset it. The vent fan still does not run. I cannot turn the vent on by pressing the vent button but the micro still heats up. What happened to the fan?

follow this steps and fix iT. God bless you

  1. Exhaust fan motorIf your exhaust fan motor is not running, there are a couple of things that you can check involving the motor to locate the problem. After removing the fan motor, you can manually attempt to turn the fan blades with your hand. If the fan motor is working properly, the blades should spin effortlessly. If this does not occur and the blades are taught, the motor will need to be replaced. Secondly, the fan motor itself can burn out due to time and usage. Using an ohm meter, the exhaust fan motor should read open for continuity. If it does not, then the fan motor has expired and will need to be replaced.
  2. ThermostatAnother part that could cause the microwave exhaust fan to not work is a faulty thermostat. A thermostat gauges the air temperature, which activates the exhaust fan when required. If this part becomes flawed, the exhaust fan will not energize and the thermostat will need to be replaced.
  3. Main control boardIf your exhaust fan is still not working and the microwave fan motor, wiring, and thermostat are operating accurately, the root cause could be with the main control board. Replace the main control board.

My Whirlpool microwave model MH6130XEB-1 made a pop noise and now will no longer heat food. Everything else works fine, clock, timer, fan, turn table, etc. Is this a fuse problem?

It can be the fuse supplying the magnetron, or the magnetron itself which has failed. Another suspect is the high voltage capacitor in this circuit.

Don't try to fix this yourself as the internals of a microwave are dangerous, with high voltages even when unplugged.

The exhaust fan just turned on by itself while we were cooking on the stove....is there a problem with the unit or is this a safety feature?

Hi,
There is a temperature sensor that turns the fan on when it senses too much heat...
No problem just normal operation...

Microwave vent turned on by itself and won't turn off

The HMV9305 has an automatic vent turn-on feature. It senses heat, possibly from the oven or range beneath, and turns on the exhaust fan until temps return to normal. Sometimes this may take 4-5 minutes, which can seem like an eternity of listening to the blower run, but it is a safety feature designed to prevent damage to the microwave from excessive heat generated by the cooktop or oven beneath it.

The problem will be a bad relay, a component that drives the relay, or a broken trace on the circuit board.

This blown trace happens a lot when the cooktop lights blow.

We regularly repair such control units for customers nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in about a week with a one-year guarantee.
