Question about Cameras

2 Answers

Hi, My daughter (12 years old) saved her money and bought a Nikon Coolpix L11 camera (SN# 34031249)from Target 8 months ago. She dropped it resulting in the following: - A silver round lens front came off (we have it) - A black lens ring with hole came off (we have it) - The interior lens extension looks tilted. - The screen says "lens error" She said it worked some at first, but had a line across it (I'm not sure if she meant the viewer or the picture) Target wouldnt take it back, and I guess thats fair. Also we did not still have the receipt I am somewhat mechanically inclined. Could you help guide me in trying to fix it. Thanks Tim Kornegay 704-333-5263, Tim@Metrolandbrokers.com 3508 Johnny Cake Lane , Charlotte, NC 28226

OOOOH, sounds like a doosy! I'm not convinced it's fixable but you are going to have to take it apart to see for sure.

Remove the case screws and try to pull the casing apart. If your not used to taking electronics apart it helps to draw diagrams or take digital pictures (with another camera of course :-) ) so that things go back together after.

You will want to pay close atention to the zoom and lense mechanism as that is what seems broken. If you can un-bend or put back in place whatever is crooked you may be able to get rid of the lens error, sounds like it's stuck or bent.

If anything happens to the optics you may be stuck with the line she is describing.

The two pieces you have that came off might snap back on or you may be able to get them to stay on with some glue if you are careful.

Good Luck!

As Abrsvcs said, finding a "For Parts" camera will help, eBay is one of the best places to look for that kind of thing.

I doubt you can get it warrantied, sometimes if you purchased it with a credit card, your credit card company will automaticaly give you an extended warranty which would probably replace the camera with something of equal value, but it sounds like you paid cash.

The problem here is that the optical block has shifted. The lens error is a result of the motor's inability to move anything inside to the "home" position. The crack might be in the lens itself or in the CCD behind the lens. In either case, "repairing" the lens area won't fix that problem. Check around for another similar camera that has other problems and completely replace the lens assembly. check with local shops asking for scrap units that your daughter can play with. A bit of luck will get you the parts you need. Paying for the replacement parts will likely cost more than the original camera.

Don't even try for warranty coverage, you will be denied. This is considered customer damage and is not covered. I repair this stuff all day long and have had to fight with customers about this. Unfortunately warranties only cover manufacturering defects. Dropping the camera or easy to spot physical damage voids the warranty.

LCD liquid has leeked

This is repairable, but must be done at a repair shop.

The camera must be taken apart completely and cleaned.

Call the number listed on the user manual and ask Nikon the cost of a repair.

Wont turn on but light is blinking

Are there any error messages on the LCD display?

Will the camera lens stay out when the camera is turned on?

Can you still take a photo/flash/sound without seeing the photo?

If the camera will not turn on even with a fresh set of batteries it could have a system or lens error in the camera.

a possible lens jamb when closed and the green led on top comes on then shuts off after the lens attemps to extend but cant.
