Hi, my laptop wont burn cd's or dvd's. Also recently the drive has started opening by itself but wont open when i press the button! also when playng music it skips and in general overheats really quickly. I'm not sure if these are all seperate problems or linked i'd be really greatful if someone could help as i have really important college work that i cannot risk losing, but cannot back up as it wont burn!

Hello fitheangel

I suspect the issues you're experiencing are linked. The trick is to determine in what way.

This issue could be...:
(A) a bad DVD-RW drive
(B) or these symptoms could be secondary to another issue inside your laptop - overheating
(C) or it could be both (the laptop has failed *because* of overheating inside the laptop).

Electronic components will behave very irratically when heated past their tolerance. And, over-heating inside laptop computers is always something to be vigilant about.

Some model laptops are notorious for running too hot. It also isn't uncommon for one or more fans to fail inside the laptop.

In either case, you can cool down the inside of your laptop some by placing it on a good quality laptop cooling pad. These cooling pads have fans built into them that force cool air into (or pull hot air out of) the vents on the bottom of your laptop.

As for the drive drawer not opening, I do believe it's related to the same root cause.

(D) To get a stuck drive open, straighten out about half an inch of a paper clip.

(E) Look on the front bezel of the drive for a tiny hole about the diameter of the end of the paper clip.

(F) Insert the paper clip (straight) into the hole and slowly but firmly press in until the latch is popped and release the drawer. In most cases, the drawer will pop out slightly. You can then carefully pull it all the way out. (Be careful not to pull of the front bezel. They're often held on w/ flimsy plastic tabs that break easily.)

(G) Is your laptop still in warranty by any chance? If so, contact Acer regarding warranty repair. If you need assistance w/ finding their contact info. etc, just let us know. We'll find what you need.

(H) If the problem persists when using the cooling pad, the next step is to replace the DVD RW drive.

If you need assistance w/ this process, we'll be more than happy to help you with it.

Please, post back here w/ what you've tried, your observations and any other questions, etc. We'll work w/ you until the issue is resolved.

Thank you
BJ @:)

Rewording of item (C):

(C) or it could be both (the DVD RW drive has failed *because* of overheating inside the laptop).

My apologies for any confusion.

Gee! That was fast! So, you think it's an overheating issue, yes?

If it is, AND if you're comfortable w/ it, you might want to open up your laptop and check the fans inside. One or more of them may be failed. You don't necessarily need to apply power to determine if a fan has failed. If the bearings are frozen, then the blades won't spin. Try giving the blades of ea fan a spin and see if they spin freely. If they do, the fan is likely OK. If they spin but not so freely, try a DROP of sewing machine oil in the bearing channel. Make sure you cover the channel back up good after. You can often access the bearing channel by pulling up the label on top of the fan. Just glue or tape it back down after so the bearings aren't exposed.

While the computer is open, use a can of compressed air to blow out all the dust and dirt. I don't recommend you use compressed air off of a shop system. Too powerful.

If you need assistance w/ dissassembly of the laptop, etc., let us know. We'll help you w/ that, too.

Of course, open up your laptop ONLY if it is no longer in warranty.

Thank you for using FixYa. And thank you very much for the FIXYA rating! :)

Oh, I just saw your comments.

Usually on sub-assemblies like optical drives, they aren't repaired. Rather the usual course of action is to replace them entirely.

You can usually purchase replacement optical drives for laptops that are still in production or for a window of time after production stops on that model.

If one is not available from the manufacturer, then don't give up. Check eBay, Amazon and other sources. It's possible you could find one there.

Failing that, you're left w/ using an external DVD RW drive. You can purchase a nice regular sized one (designed to fit into a 5.25" desktop PC bay) and install it into a 5.25" hard disk drive enclosure that will connect to your computer's USB 2.0 port.

I don't recommend you get one using fireware as firewire is slower than USB 2.0. Having the drive external to your computer may cause it to run a little more slowly but it will still work quite nicely.

Using a 5.25" enclosure will enable you to purchase a nice quality burner rather than be limited w/ what the manufacturer has available for your computer.

Post back if you have more questions. I'll be happy to help.

Not all 5.25" external hard disk drive enclosures support optical drives as well.

Make sure you purchase one that
(1) has fans preferably
(2) supports optical drives as well as hard disk drives
(3) *** Is powered *** (has its own A/C adapter)
You don't want it trying to draw power off of your laptop's USB bus.

For these kinds of online purchases, I use www.newegg.com. Newegg's prices are very competitive, their customer service is excellent and you can find reviews listed alongside most of the products they sell.
