The most common cause of the problem you just described is a lid switch malfunction or lid strike (actuator) problem. Symptoms may include, filling and stopping on the intial fill cycle, stopping right after the wash cycle, not advancing to rinse or spin cycles, and a wash tub that will not drain.

The lid switch is usually mounted under the washer top casing, on the right hand side on most top load models. It is activated by a plastic piece on the lid (called a "Lid Strike" or "Actuator") through a small hole on the rim of the wash tub opening. In many cases the lid strike breaks off the lid, or the lid switch becomes loose and no longer makes contact. Inspect the lid to make sure the lid strike is still intact, and then inspect the mounting screws (adjacent to the small opening on the wash tub rim) and make sure they are snug. If you determine the switch to be defective, the following link explains how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3557193-replacing_a_lid_switch

On some models, the lid switch is located under the top casing by one of the lid hinges. You will know if you if you have this type of switch, because It does not have a lid strike and the small hole on the right hand side of the wash tub will not be present. This switch is actuated (toggled) by a rod on the lid hinge. With this type of switch, if you locate it and it can be toggled by hand, you may only need to adjust the actuator by bending it slightly.

NOTE: You do not have to drain or bail the water from the washer tub to perform this repair. Once a defective lid switch is replaced, the washer should drain normally.

Replacement parts (if required) can be purchased at any of the following web sites:

searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repairclinic.com

If the model number is correct, the part number for a replacement switch is 279347. The actuator part number is 359807.

The average price of a replacement lid switch is about $20 - $30 if you perform the repair yourself. Prices will vary between sites so shop and compare. If you have questions, or need additional assistance, please post back and let me know. This is a very simple repair that you can easily perform without the assistance of a repairman.

If this advice does not help you enough, repairclinic.com has a Repair Manual you can order to assist you with all your repairs. The part number is 1170635 and is priced at about $20.

Searspartsdirect.com also has a repair manual for about the same price. Part number 4314044L. I hope this information is helpful to you.

The wash machine will fill but wont stop filling

If it stops filling when you turn it off, the water level switch is malfunctioning. If the water runs in regardless, the water inlet valve needs replaced.

I have a kenmore series 70 washer, top loading. It filled up with water and then stopped. I have tried other cycles, but nothing happens. The water won't drain and there are no noises. Nothing happens no...

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getModel!retrieve.pd?modelNumber=110.24712300

Also see the Whirlpool Service manual for top load, direct drive washers including test procedures and a troubleshooting section.

If you manually move the timer to the spin cycle and it drains and spins, the motor and transmission are OK.

If it won't do anything after filling, the problem points to the timer or motor.

It is relatively easily repaired but you'll have to decide if the cost is worth the repair.

Personally, I tend to fix rather than replace so I'm probably not the one to ask.

Slow Cold Water Fill

There is possibly a filter screen in the hoses as well as the water valve.Check the hoses for screens.Occasionally the water valve will deteriorate inside and must be replaced.
I am on a water well and have the same problem. This weekend I installed a inline filter purchased from Lowes. It has stopped the sand and silt problem. You will have to buy one extra water hose to do this yourself.

Series 70 fills wit water stops then makes a slight buzzing sound

The electric motor my have failed or a part called a capacitor could be the problem? The capacitor is part of the starting circuit of the electric motor, if this fails the motor will not start therefore the washing machine won't spin or agitate.

70 Series will fill, but nothing else

Check the lid strike and lid switch . If the switch is not engaged with the lid closed, the machine thinks the lid is open and won't agitate or spin.
You can check by slowly lowering the lid and listening for a clicking sound from the switch. Alternatively, use a pen to press the lid switch down and see if the machine starts.
A new lid switch, if required, is not too expensive but including labor it might be over $100. I suggest replacing it yourself if you can.

Kenmore heavy duty 70 series washer

The washer starts on a fill cycle. If it's not getting any water check the screens in the valve where the water line hooks to the back. If it is getting water but not filling up pull up on the drain hose. If it is to far down the drain it can **** the water right out of the unit.
