Question about Canon EOS Rebel XS 35mm SLR Camera

1 Answer

A brand new camera and there is no picture in the viewfinder. It will take the picture and the picture somes up to be reviewed. However, I need to be able to see the image before I shot.

When you say "viewfinder" I assume you're talking about the monitor on the back where the pictures come up to be reviewed?

The viewfinder is actually the small optical window in the hump at the top of the camera. SLRs have used that for half a century for framing, and by default the Rebel XS uses that as well. Can I assume that is working normally, that is, you can see through it when you put your eye up to it?

In order to activate the LiveView feature, letting you use the camera like a point&shoot, holding it out wobbling at arm's length instead of braced against your body and using up juice lighting the monitor, follow these steps: Set the shooting mode to a Creative Zone mode. Under the Setup tab, select [Live View function settings] and press SET. Select [Live View Shoot] and press SET. Select [Enable] and press SET. Press MENU to exit. Press SET to turn on the LiveView image. For full details, refer to the "Live View Shooting" chapter in the manual.

I'm not saying that I'm opposed to LiveView; I use it when appropriate, as when the camera is on a tripod or at an awkward angle.

Nikon digital SLR LCD viewfinder

No. The D60's LCD is used for menus, shooting settings, and reviewing pictures after you take them. You have to use the viewfinder to compose your pictures. Nikon introduced the LiveView capability into their DSLRs with the D3 and the D300, introduced after the D60.

LCD SCREEN

LCD = Lousy Camera Device? Get used to using the optical viewfinder. The LCD is great for reviewing images after you've taken them, but it leaves a lot to be desired as a viewfinder. Keeping your camera steady is no small feat at the best of times, but being forced to hold the camera away from your body to view an image through the LCD adds a new level of instability to the picture-taking process.
