Router default passwords

Almost all routers and access points have an administrator password that's needed to log into the device and modify any configuration settings.

Most devices use a weak default password like "password" or the manufacturer's name, and some don't have a default password at all.

As soon as you set up a new WLAN router or access point, your first step should be to change the default password to something else.

You may not use this password very often, so be sure to write it down in a safe place so you can refer to it if needed.

Without it, the only way to access the router or access point may be to reset it to factory default settings which will wipe away any configuration changes you've made.

This can be done by opening your internet browser (i.e. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Opera, etc.) and typing in the address bar 192.168.1.1.

Once you hit enter, an authentication panel would pop-up requiring you to enter a username and password.
Note: If entering 192.168.1.1 does not bring up anything, your default gateway may not be that.

For Windows, just go to Run command (Windows Start button, then click Run), and then type "CMD".
A DOS prompt would pop-out and you would just need to type, "IPCONFIG". Look for the words "Default Gateway", the numbers beside it are the ones you need to enter into your browser

Usually, its 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 so most likely you wouldn't have to do that.
Another Note: The usual username and password is "admin" (without the quotes).
For some routers, the username is admin, and the password is blank.

If you haven't changed this, the username and password is the default.
If you don't know the default username and password, you could check it at.
Change Router Passwords

Network security has become a very real and important issue.
The ability for people to access sensitive hardware and information is a critical issue and all the measures that can reasonably be put in place to stop this act should be implemented.

One way to protect your network hardware is to change the password for access to your router from the factory default to one that is unique and private.
Read on to learn more.

Open your Internet browser, type the address of the router into the URL address bar, and open it. The address is typically in the form of 192.168.X.X.
This is the local network address.

Enter the account name and password to open the router setup utility.
Navigate through the setup utility until you find the screen that will let you change the password. You will need to enter the old password to change it.

Decide on a new password that has good security to a hacker.
The best password is more than 8 characters and uses both lower case and upper case letters and numbers.

Some will allow you to use special characters also.
Do not make the password anything that can be found in a dictionary or any date of significance.

Enter the old password in the change password page of the router.
When prompted then enter the new password.

You will be asked to enter it twice to confirm that the correct password is entered.
Immediately, record the new password in some secure location that you can find if you forget it.

Confirm the password change on the router page and log off the router.
To check the information and that the router has been setup correctly with the new password, open the router address in the browser again and login with the new information.

If you are able to login, you have successfully changed the password.

Lost my password

  • Username = admin
  • Password = password
    • For older devices, password = 1234
If you have changed the default password and have forgotten it, you will need to reset the NETGEAR device to factory default settings in order to use the default username and password. Please note: restoring a device to its factory default settings will erase any changes you have saved to the device.

If you have changed the default password and have forgotten the password, you may need to reset the NETGEAR device to factory default settings. When a NETGEAR device resets, it goes back to the state when it was new - all information that was entered by hand is lost! Examples include critical things you need to get online, such as ISP username, ISP password, IP addresses, wireless security keys, and ports and services that were opened. It all needs to be re-entered.
So, have your ISP information before resetting the router.Naturally, if you moved to a new city, or if you bought a used router, the old information in the router may not be of use to you. Contact your ISP if you can't connect any computer directly to the Internet. Then, if there is a connection problem when the router is added, see No Internet Access Through the Router Reset for most routers with a reset button on the rear panelWrite down configuration information such as IP addresses, security keys, opened ports and services, etc., that you modified. (The default username is admin and the password is either password or 1234. Try these before resetting the router.)
  1. Press the reset button on the back until the test light blinks. This takes about 10 seconds. (To avoid accidental resets, the small button is recessed. Use a pen or paperclip to access it.)
  2. Release the button.
  3. Wait for the router to reboot.
  4. Log in with the default password. If the router configuration was not cleared, try these additional steps AFTER the router has finished rebooting.
  5. Unplug the router's power.
  6. Press and hold the reset button. While the button is held down, reconnect router's power.
  7. Continue to hold the reset button for 20 seconds after reconnecting the power.
  8. Wait for the router to reboot.
  9. Log in with the default password.
For DGN2000 / DG834Gv5 Routers
To restore the factory default configuration settings when you do not know the login password or IP address, press both the Wireless button and WPS button on the side of the modem router for 5 seconds.
For FR314, FR318, and FV318
These routers require reloading the firmware in order to recover from a lost password. Download the most recent firmware from NETGEAR's Web site before proceeding. Follow the instructions in the manual.
For routers with a 9-pin manager port on the rear panel: RT314, RT311, RM356, RT328, RT338, RH340, and RH348
See Updating Router Firmware That Uses a Manager Port.

I forgot my wep key and router username/password

Use first the default username and password according to your router's manual. If it doesn't work reset the router. Look for the reset pin hole on the back of the router. Press and hold it down for 1 seconds.
After that use the default username and password for sure this time it will work. As soon as you are able to access the configuration page of your router please setup a new WEP key to keep you network secured.

Cant setup or connect to internet through router

Different ISPs require different configurations. If you have a Linksys router, such as the WRT54G, there are 2 ways on how you can configure it, either by running the Setup CD or by doing manual configuration. This particular router has its own web utility and you can access it by typing its IP addres on your web browser, ex. http://192.168.1.1. By default, it doesn’t have any username and its password is admin.

Once you’re inside the setup page, you can configure now the router for DHCP, PPPoE or STATIC IP settings. For DSL customers using a PPPoE account, some modem needs to be configured into BRIDGE MODE first and then the router will be set to PPPoE with the correct username and password (given by ISP). If your a DHCP account, modem doesn’t require any configuration. It will work with its default setting and the router would be set to DHCP. Once done, powercycle your devices to establish internet connection.

That's because you have to enter the username and password in order to access/change the security features of this router. There are default login/password entries required for security access within the router, even when it's set back to original factory settings.

Check your user manual for the default login information.
