The plate above the blade has broken. It still works but makes quite a row. Is it worth trying to repair an old flymo Compact 330?

If the machine does a job for you and does it well it is. Most mowers have what is called the "blade adapter" piece which slides up onto the bottom of the crankshaft above the blade. If a "plate" is broken, parts may be available or you could have a welder fashion you one using the broken one as a guide.

Flymo sabre hedge trimmer blades move but do not cut!

It sounds as if they have come off of the spindle inside and are not synchronised as they should be so the bottom blade is being pushed out of the way when trying to cut. You need to open up the head and unscrew the top to the small gearbox and make sure the bottom blade hasn't jumped up off of the catch point on the shaft.
