Question about Craftsman 21 Hp 42" Deck, Ys 4500 Lawn Tractor

1 Answer

21 hp model 917.271832...CraftsmanHad the carb needle replaced...new oil new fuel filter........won't start. prime it and it runs for a few seconds and dies. appears it is not getting fuel to the carb. also the throttle linkage is now loose and will not push the throttle lever on the carb to the idle position. Everything (springs and such) seem to be in place for I didn't mess with them when I took the carb off.

Will not start without priming the carburator, and then only run for a few seconds

It's not getting fuel thru the carberator another solution is the needle is stuck sometimes after it sets over the winter the needle ( which has a rubber end ) sticks closed

Hp gas

Follow gas line from tank to carb. Observe bottom of carb. Remove screw holding carb bowl to carb. Clean bowl. Pinch off gas line with pliers. Ensure float falls down easily. Float up no fuel flow, float down fuel flow. Observe screw that hold carb bowl to carb, see if it has a whole thru it, clean with small wire, bread wrapper works good. Observe center fuel port, clean with wire. Remove pin that holds float and meter needle, clean port with wire. Reassemble. Ensure air filter is clean, oil is full, 30w oil, spark plug is clean and properly gapped. Replace air filter and spark plug once a year. Empty old oil out if any grey is observed in oil, this is moisture, can accumulate after winter storage. Clean out side of carb with carb cleaner to ensure choke can rotate freely. Always use Stabile in gas.
All newer mowers have a low oil shutoff.

John deere mower Won't start

Sounds like the carb is varnished up and needs to be rebuilt. They make rebuild kits depending on the carb number and you can rebuild it.

Turns over but won't start noticed the oil smells like fuel any ideas?

if the oil smells like fuel then the needle valve in the carb is not seating then the fuel spills over threw the breather hose and into the cylinder replace the needle valve and seat change the oil a few times and add a shut off valve to the fuel line and run the carb out of fuel when you are done using it you can thank our newer fuel for this

Mower will start when choke is primed, however will not remain running for more than a few seconds. Have replaced gas, air filter and cleaned carburator. Still same results

Either your carb is not as clean as you think it is or maybe fuel air mixture is no good. Did you try adjusting needle valves on carb? Good Luck...

The last is the key to the whole problem, the float and needle are binding or somehow not working properly, sometimes the needle gets build up on it and that keeps it from moving up and down smoothly. Give the whole carb. a good cleaning to fix the reving.

I can start my 4.75 HP Briggs & Stratton Lawnmower but it dies after a few minutes. I replaced the armature but the same thing happens. I can keep it running if I press the prime bulb a couple of times...

Try replacing the float and needle. The float (floats) and pulls the needle up to let gas through to the carb. It will stay running as long as you press the prime bulb because this sends gas straight to the carb without going through the gas bowl. It's best to remove the carb and clean it then replace the float and needle

I have two craftsman lawn mowers that will no start. Both have new plugs and are sparking. Changed air filters and oil. One will start for a couple of seconds then stops. When I kept priming it, it stayed...

it sounds like you have compression but the fuel air mixture is out of setting. This could be due partialy to a stuck fuel needle or mixture needles that are worn or out of allignment. If you could give me the model # on the unit i could help with the type of carb and the inital settings on the mixture needles.
