Probably the best course of action would be to replace the hard drive but first you would need to find out what type of interface the hard drive is. For example IDE or SATA.
Look at the pictures below, these are 2 1/2ins laptop hard drives. Your hard drive will no doubt be 3 1/2 ins desktop type hard drives but the interfaces are the same.

suddenly the hard drive has died and its telling - 782f577.jpg

I'm fairly certain that the drive in the recorder will be IDE but you will have to check this yourself.
The cost of a new hard drive is not that much these days but i would replace the hard drive with of the same capacity that was in the recorder. 80GB for example.
The cost will be between $40-$60.

Can you record from a smart tv with arecording box

First of all you need to check if your TV supports recording. Some 2010 models do and most 2011 have it implemented. Look for stickers or logos such as:
  • USB Recording
  • PVR (Personal Video Recorder)
  • DVR (Digital Video Recorder

  • The following manufacturers support it in some of their models. Typically mid-end to high-end models. Check the manufacturer web site if you are unsure.
  • Samsung
  • Sony
  • LG
  • Philips
  • Panasonic
  • Toshiba
  • Sharp (only Time Shift pausing)
  • Grundig

    What you need

Many consumers have USB recording enabled TVs without actually using the function - simply because it requires an extra USB hard drive ou need the following:
    1. USB Recording: A HDTV that supports recording.
    2. A USB HDD: FlatpanelsHD uses a USB HDD from Transcend.
    3. Digital channels: Recording is only enabled on digital channels - not analog. You can record SD, HD and 3D.
Some manufacturers recommend USB hard drives with external power supplies but we have used a Trandscend USB HDD that takes power from the USB plug on all manufacturers' TVs without any problems. Manufacturers typically allow 1:1 recording, meaning that you will see no loss in picture quality.

How to set up USB Recording

Once you have purchased a USB hard drive and connected it on the back of the TV you can move on to "pairing" the USB HDD with the TV. Here is how to set up USB recording.

  • Connect the USB HDD to a free USB port on the back of the TV.
  • The USB hard drive now needs to be formatted (all data will be deleted).
  • Most TVs help you to format the USB HDD automatically but on some models you need to enter the menu and select format HDD (or something similar)

My dvr worked fine for several months and then all of sudden it stopped recording Could it be that the hard drive just stopped recording because of failure?

    Hi there,
the HDD is a common component to fail in a DVR.
The DVR Itself should actually tell you the status of the storage device if you navigate the menu.

I could probably assist you remotely to find out if you like?

The disk-drive inside the PVR is "dying", and it cannot work fast-enough to "smoothly" send audio/video data out. Replace the disk-drive.

Lorex-edge model no lh314 series will not record and beeps and says hdd is not installed

You need top open the top of the case by removing the screws and check to see if the hard drive is operating (it will be warm to the touch and may be making a slight noise). If the hard drive is not working, verify that it is plugged in. If the hard drive is bad, you can replace it with a SATA hard drive. The Lorex system will see the new hard drive and ask you to format it for use with the system.

My USB port broke on my 1T hp SimpleSave external hard drive. I have approx 900 GBs of music and videos and pictures. What is best course of action?

Do you mean the actual port on the portable hard drive? If so, it's quite simple. You should take out the HDD inside the shell, and purchase an enclosure which you place the HDD in, you can continue to use it as an external hard drive after! :)

Drive is not ready to be read ?Error Check/device/harddisk1/DR7 ?

if you external hdd do not show on other computers, usually it meant that power supply on these casings die... but in this particular case it is possible that power supplied by usb port is insufficient to support data transfer. connect recommended power supply (on the back of this particular model you have usb plug and power plug, power supply is/was sold separately) usually hdd inside is still fine and retain data.

if this did not solve your problem, i would suggest purchase little powered universal hdd craddle, they cost about $15 to $25, remove, hdd from casing and connect to the craddle. data should be then accessible directly from your usb port.

as long as hdd is turning, data is accessible and recoverable, even if disk was wiped off.
