Question about Compaq Presario 5000 PC Desktop

I have a HP Compaq Presario SR1820NX PC Desktop. But I have a problem you might be able to help me out with every time I try to start up it,s a black-screen and error 256 comes up and just constantly saying to hold ctr l + alt+ Del to restart but nothing happens when i do that. But every thing Ive read up on it says it has something too do w/ram memory either being full or to add more memory and a supposed friend has the driver now that he has the driver and saying hes probably going to reboot and loose all my moms files which I really don't want but he says it pretty much the only way with out having to pay a whole lot or having to search threw all the files and and find out which one is corrupt or whats wrong but PL Z help or give me an idea on what you think PLZ Thanks JAYREW

FIRST OF ALL, I suggest you buy an external enclosure, take the harddrive out of your Mom's computer, and install it in the enclosure.
(Before some nimrod deletes your Mom's files!)

The external enclosure has a USB cable. You just plug the USB cable into another computers USB port. Any available open USB port.
Copy her files to disk/s, or flashdrives.

The HP Compaq Presario SR1820NX desktop computer, comes with an IDE harddrive. (160GB)

IDE is also known as PATA.

Desktop harddrive's are 3.5 inches across in width.
(3 and 1/2 inches)

You need a PATA 3.5 external enclosure.

This is one example of a PATA 3.5 external enclosure,

(After you have recovered ***********'s information, you can install another harddrive in this enclosure, and have an external harddrive.
More storage space.
Plus it is portable.
She can take it anywhere)

If she does not have the Recovery CD Disk/s, then it is suggested to purchase them.

The disk/s are free.

Put the harddrive back into the computer, after you have copied ***********'s info off.
Start the computer.
Open the optical drive, (CD/DVD drive), put the Recovery Disk 1 in.

Go through the screens.
When you are asked, do a NON-DESTRUCTIVE INSTALLATION.
This is a REPAIR.

(Do Not do a Destructive Installation. That is a full install)

    Never had a solution pop up as a clarification also. I'll get that fixed!

    Secondly, the parser needs to leave what I have printed, Alone!

    "After you have recovered ***********'s information,........."

    is supposed to state,

    "After you have recovered your M-o-t-h-e-r-s information, ........."

Compaq Presario sr1820nx restore software shortcut missing in start menu. When I try to access restore (D) drive all I can see is a don't erase warning.

do not erase. that is were your software is if you did you will have to buy new software ok. go under system restore then let it do it think ok.

your hard drive is failing. try a system restore and if that does not fix the issue you need to buy a replacement hard drive

I need to replace the CMOS battery in my Compaq Presario SR1820NX but need to know where cabinet release are

According to the manual, which can be found at:,

Removing the Side Panel:
1. Remove the side panel by loosening the screw (D)
that secures the panel to the PC chassis.
2. Slide the panel back about 1 inch (2.5 cm), and
then lift it off the unit.

WARNING: Beware of sharp edges inside
the chassis.

i worked for hp and compaq it is well known issue to reslove this issue

1#turn off the computer and uplug the power cable from the computer and then hold the power button for 20 second then turn on the computer and the momment you back to desktop screen
go to download driver from hp site and here is the web site and restart the computer .

Very well could have toasted you network card. If everything else works, try installing a different one (and drivers) that is known to work. MM85
