My Kodak AIO5500 is supposed to decipher between a fax and a voice incoming - well it does not!! have tried everything - even bought an answering machine as I had voicemail on my line, and that does not work either. Have changed the # of rings too and it doesnt work, AND get this, it does not have a programming for distinctive ring, so I can't even subsribe to that either to fix the problem. My sister has a DELL all in one and it has distinctive ring capabilities. I can send a fax, I am very frustrated as they have not been able to help me at Kodak. I have to phone into them, but have not had time, as I know it will be a time consuming process. I have been bothering people to fax me from time to time to troubleshoot, and it is not very convenient to just bother people all the time. Very frustrated.

Solution - if you cant return it, sell it in garage sale and get a different one!!

I was able to return my Kodak AIO printer to Staples with their replacement plan! Didnt know I had even purchased the plan - was able to return it AFTER 1 year for full refund!! I instead bought a Canon Pixma MX850 for not much more money, and I am very happy with it. You can fine tune all the settings for answering and receiving faxes, whether or not you have a single line, dedicated line, or distinctive ring, answering machine/voice mail. It is more user friendly AND there is a button for two sided printing (which my Kodak could never do although it claimed it could, and they could never tell me how to use it and it was very vague in the manual). It has a colour or B & W button for quick copies. I know there is more about it that I have not yet discovered, but I am very happy with it. The kodak AIO was a poor excuse for an AIO when it came to faxing and two-sided printing.

The majority of non receive issues are phone line problems.
3 conditions must exist for a fax to receive, the phone line voltage must be high enough, the phone line current must be high enough the the DB gain must be correct.
A fax receive should be viewed in the same way a remote controle works.
When you send a fax, you manually access the phone line when you select send, you connect to the phone line, normally via a relay. Once that physical connection is made, it can send anything. Maybe not well, but it will send.
Where as receiving is an electrical signal that activates the machine. If your phone line is not up to standard, its like haveing a remote control with weak or dead batteries and trying to turn on your TV with those weak batteries in it.
Issues, simply a bad phone cord between the machine and phone jack. Some resistance may have acrured over the years. The phone jack itself may have a poor connection.
A staticy phone line will cause a fax not to pick up. Plug a phone into that line and see if there is any noticible static.
Multiple devices plugged into the phone line with the fax machine. ETC an answering machine, credit card machine, etc can cause more of a draw on a shared line, if that is the situation, at least for a test, remove everything but the fax machine from the line and see if it receives then.
Rarely if the machine can send and not receive is the machine an issue.
Have your phone lines checked well and that sould resolve the issue. And make sure the line is not plugged into the extension or phone jack on the machine, but plugged into the line jack. That is also a common problem.

If you have a digital phone line, that is also a problem, Fax machines for the most part require an analogue line, DSL can have a filter put on.

Fax will not send on HP 5610v All in One

their could be many reasons your fax machine is doing this but I'm going say with the information given that you may have a bad phone cable or no connection at all. also if your fax is not on a dedicated line someone could be using that line or simply picking up a phone on the same line before you fax will cause you your fax to fail. I hope this has been of some help... please don't forget to rate

HP Office Jet 5610v All-In-One

If it is a dedicated fax line.
Then make sure auto answer is turned on.
Then go to Setup/Menu> and press the right arrow key till you see basic fax setup>
Then press Ok> Then press the right arrow key and scroll to basic fax setup> then press ok.
Then scroll to rings to answer and set it to 2.
Then press cancel and come to the main display.
Press setup/menu> and scroll to advance fax setup> and scroll to distinctive ring pattern> and select all rings.
You should be able to receive and send faxes without any problem if it is a dedicated fax line.

If it is a shared line with phone, voice mail or answering machine then you will hev to get a distinctive ring pattern from your telephone service provider.
So that it can distinguish your Fax message and voice message.

If any problem let me know.
