I believe it is a hardware problem, not software. Let's do some simple diagnostics. A) Is the computer dirty inside, as well as inside the Power Supply? If you have never cleaned it, or had it cleaned, it is. When a Processor becomes too hot, it turns off. Caused by one of two things, or both. 1) Computer case fan in the front is dirty, and the Heatsink Assembly that receives air through the plastic tunnel is dirty. 2) Thermal paste compound that is in-between the top of the Processor case, and the bottom of the Heatsink, has dried up. B) Checks out? Let's go on. Power Supply is developing a weak Voltage power rail. Check the 12 Volt power rail. 11 to 13 Volts indicates it's okay. Less than 11 Volts means it's time to replace the Power Supply. Mini-Towerhttp://support.dell.com/support/edocs/sy... Desktophttp://support.dell.com/support/edocs/sy...

Soft ware problem. Try pressing the ESC button during boot up, this will allow you to go into safe mode from where you can reset your system to a previous time

Dell Inspiron 1545 desktop freezes after login.

HI, when did the problem started? what you can do is to restart the computer in safemode with networking. And if the problem just started recently. you can try to do the system restore.
  • click on start
  • go to all programs then accessories
  • then go to system tools and choose system restore
  • then choose a different restore point
  • then wait for the restore to finish and try to log on again.
  • if there is still a problem logging on
  • try to have the system check the files system
  1. click on start
  2. go to all programs
  3. go to accessories and choose command prompt
  4. now type sfc /scannow and wait for the system to finish doing the scan.
  5. then try to log on again.
thank you for using Fixya, you recommendation is highly appreciated

My computer, Windows XP, freezes when I use Firefox

Your system loaded with Windows Xp Operating System might get affected by various viruses and malware. The antivirus softwares installed in your system for the removal and prevention of viruses from your system cause the freezing issue. This antivirus softwares might take too many time to load and it also make the entire system slow to boot. The antivirus programs result in the freezing of the Windows Xp during start up. Thus you need to temporary uninstall the antivirus software during the start up of your system.

Post Boot Freeze

It freezes because one of the programs set to start at boot crashes. To identify which immediately after booting open Task Manager and look at the processes - one should reach 99% CPU use. Once you have found it stop it from launching at boot or just uninstall it.

Lenovo 300- N200 fails during the boot process. Screen freezes after boot sequence.

Is it working with latest update from windows if you are using any windows operating system? Some applications installed by you which run at startup time hug the system.
You can try logging into the system in safe mode and try to see whether you are able to enter into the system or not. Once entered with safe mode rename the installation folder for the new applications that you might have installed, after which the system started freezing.
After renaming it you can boot the system in normal mode. As the new applicaiton will not be able to run (due to folder renaming) it is most likely that the system will boot properly and you will be able to enter the system.
Then rename back the folder to original verify the compatibility of th eapplicaiton and if possible uninstall the application.
This process has saved me from a lot of system complications. Hope this helps you.
By the way which operating system are you using?

It's time to reinstall the operating system--you have had a virus destroy the boot/load sector, thus the lag.

Freezing or shutoff on boot, setup or minutes into operation

Try this:

Boot the system with your Windows XP installation disk. When the boot options window appears select R for recovery console. Once you have logged into the DOS session type: fixmbr and hit the enter or return key and select "y" for yes you want to do this. Type: fixboot and hit the return key again, hit "y" for yes.
