Question about Badger Basket 1905 Round Doll Bassinet

6 Answers

My Badger 5 garbage disposal will not work. It makes a humming noise but will not spin. I hit the reset button, used the hex wrench provided and turned it clockwise, used a broom handle through the top and it still won't start. It turns freely with the wrench and broom but only makes the humming sound when I turn it on.

My garbage disposal won't turn and makes a humming sound when turned on.

Even after I push the RESET button (recessed at the bottom), all I get is a humming sound...

My Badger 5 disposal makes a humming sound when turned on.  It makes a low volume crackling sound after 4-5 tries to start the motor.  Resetting the disposal did not fix the problem.

Same problems as the others. Hit reset button, turned it with a hex wrench and still all it does is hum.

I have the same problem. We used the hex wrench, made sure it was toatally clean in the diposer and used the reset switch. All it does is hum.

disposal turns freely and I have pushed in the reset button. Nothing happens. Unit stopped after hitting a peach pit erroneously thrown into the sink.

Same thing. Hit reset cleared the wheel using hex wrtench and a plunger handle...nothing but the hum...

I had a badger garbage disposal and recently it stopped working it would just hum. I checked for anything that might be stuck but nothing. So i went and bought another one not even a month ago and now the same thing has happened. I have checked to make sure there is nothing down there and the wrench turns freely. What do i do?

  • splaine Aug 30, 2008

I had this same problem after my wife tried to clean out a fish bowl (she said she skimed out all of the little pebbles). She still missed a lot of them and many ended up in the disposal. Anyways it made the same humming sound when turning it on. This humming noise means something is jamming it from spinning. The hum is just the sound of the motor trying to spin (DO NOT LEAVE IT HUMMING FOR A LONG TIME)

HERES HOW TO FIX IT:
-If you have a lot of whatever's causing the jam still in there, I suggest you take out the disposal and flush as much as possible out with water (I had to do this to get majority of the rock pebbles out) while holding it upside down.

-Now you need a decent tool set, get a 3/8" ratchet, 7/16" deep socket, and a 3" extension.

-It's easiest if you put the disposal back in the sink to do this step as it may take some muscle and the sink will hold it in place.

-If you look down into the disposal from the top of the sink you should see a nut in the middle of the disposal (and the 2 silver spinning teeth on the sides).

-The nut in the middle is what you need to get the ratchet on.

-Now just muscle the ratchet clockwise for awhile then counter-clockwise for awhile and repeat if necessary until the rotor spins completely freely. When there is completely no reistance when turning it you are done.

-Pull the ratchet out and try turning on the disposal. If you did the above step correctly then if should turn on like normal.

Congratulations you just saved yourself from calling a plumber!!

I know you posted this a long time ago. But I have tried everything except this solution. I am a girl with no experience. I have fixed things around the house before. I have a lot of tools that my brothers keep buying me. Question: Do I unhook the garbage disposal from under the sink and put it in the sink? Just making sure before I jump off and do this. Thanks

the answer from pidass2004 solved the problem. I used a 9/16 socket on an 8'' extension. Thanks rs

I had this problem... talked to my plumber buddy, who has encountered this a few times. He solved it after talking to the local service depot for Badger 5. This is easiest if you have two people.

Get under the unit with the hex wrench and insert it into the opening in the bottom. Get someone else to hit the switch, and the start rotating the hex wrench (I think counter-clockwise?). Be careful as the hex wrench may start rotating quickly and fly off at you.

Mine started running within a second or two - if yours doesn't, turn off the switch. You might have a different problem.

My theory here is that even though your garburetor is not jammed with anything, the motor may have stopped at the exact spot where the magnetic field reverses. When you flick the power on, it the rotor is just sitting there, but needs a nudge to get it moving again. Or I may be completely wrong.

Good luck

OMG... solution #2 worked... SIMPLY ROTATE THE HEX WRENCH ... COUNTER CLOCKWISE... insertion is located at the bottom of the unit....

    THANK YOU... THANK YOU!

The motor started up with a little push but would not start on its own after being turned off. It was a nice try.

Mine did this also. I tried the hex wrench and it wasn't stuck. So I assummed the motor brushes were worn and I treated it like a starter motor on a car. You turn on the switch and while it's humming you tap the outside of the motor with a rubber mallot or something handy. Mine started the first tap but it may take more. Like I said I suspect the brushes are worn and will likely happen again until they are changed if they can be changed.

Wow! I did all the above suggestions using the hex wrench, broom handle and hitting the reset button. Nothing worked to get the standing water to go down and the blades to grind the vegetable peels that were causing the blockage.

When I read about using a rubber mallot to tap the motor I figured that was something new I hadn't seen before. I too thought it was a joke ... however, what did I have to lose...it worked immediately! Thank you! My cursing didn't help a bit but not only did the hitting work it also made me feel better! Thanks!

Hex wrench on bottom wouldn't turn it. Tried solution # one, but nut was larger than 1/2" and needed 6" extension also. Didn't have either one on hand. Took long rounded metal rod and tapped it gently with rubber hammer on top and sides of the nut to free it. After a few minutes, the unit started spinning.

Disposal will not spin. It has a humming sound when I turn it on but it will not work.

first reach under the disposal and there is a reset button under there push that and see if it works, if not then there is a wrench that came with your disposal you need take that and put it in the slot under the disposal and give it a turn to loosen the blades up, then hit the reset button again. If that doesn't work then sadly the motor went and will need to replace it.

Garbage dispoal not working. The blades spin freely inside, the reset button has been reset, when you switch it on the moter makes a faint humming sound, and the allen wrench will not rotate either way.

You need a new disposal.
Free-rotating blades show there is no obstruction.
Humming says you have power.
Frozen allen wrench says bearings are rusted.
Motor is now overheating each timer electricity is turned on, and motor will overheat and stop humming.
At least the drain is clean and water is not flooding under the sink, which means you can continue using sink until disposal is replaced.

I wrote tips for installing disposal from days when I worked apartment maintenance:

When I turn on the garbage disposal unit it hums. I tried the Allen Key and hit the reset switch. It still does not work

I also am having the same problem. Tried the reset button as well as the jambuster. The allen wrench swivels with ease from the nudge of a finger. The motor turns on, but the disposal will not spin. Do I have to take it the garbage disposal apart?

The motor on my Badger 5 disposal was humming but not rotating. I cleaned out all the debris, reset it and now there's nothing - no hum, nothing. Is my badger dead?

The badger 5 has a dislodge device on the bottom right in the very center. An allen wrench will fit if you have lost the tool that came with it.

FIrts you will need to dislodge anything preventing it from turning. (Insert the right size allen wrench and turn both directions) The remove whatever comes loose after dislodging.

Then opush the red reset button on the bottom. Check the breaker that powers up the disposal, as you may have tripped it.

If the breaker is on, the unit is turning freely, and the reset button is pushed, then the next step is to check for power using a volt meter, to make sure the disposal is indeed getting power. If all the above has been done, the unit IS getting power then yes, the disposal needs to be replaced.

Badger 1 1/3 HP Garbage disposal is stuck. I have hit the reset button took out what was jamming it and it still hums but won't turn. Please help!

Can you turn the motor by hand? (with the wrench in the bottom of the disposal) If not then you either still have a restriction/jam or the motor is seized. If you can spin the motor somewhat freely with the wrench then you most likely have a bad motor and will have to replace it. Hope this helps

The blades on my Badger 1 insinkerator don't move. The motor hums when turned on. The reset button stays out when pushed.

You will need to free the blades by inserting the food disposal hex key or a 1/4 Allen Wrench into the very bottom of the disposal in the center. After inserting the wrench you need to turn it all the way in both directions to free what has the blades held up. It may be hard to turn but afterwards pull the debris out from inside the disposal. Hit the reset button and it will work. Do not keep turning it on until you free the blade and then reset.
