Thanks for the suggestion but....I can't do that. That's the problem.

My dvd is locked after changing zone 4 times .. i haven't intentionally changed any zones other than the initial time .. but it has re-set itself all the other times. Any ideas?

A DVD player region code can only be altered 4 times and it locks permanently to the 4th region code.
To make your DVD player region free, please click on this link and follow my instructions :-

My pc dvd drive won't let me change region back

No its not a bug most DVD-ROM computer drives allow you 4 or 5 region changes first check your region code and number at DVD Region Info it will tell you region code Australia is 4 UK is 2 sand so one plus you region changes http://www.visualdomain.net/

I however do suggest removing your region code from your DVD-ROM using a region free firmwar or on your PC you can use http://www.dvdidle.com/dvd-region-free.htm it is however a bit pricey the region 0 firmware hack would be better.

You can only change the region code 4 times and then it locks onto that region. There are firmware upgrades for various model DVDs on the Internet that makes the DVD drive region free, but if you make a mistake in upgrading the firmware or installing the wrong firmware version then the DVD drive is turned into a piece of junk.
The best way to solve your problem is to install software that defeats the region code so you can play DVDs from any region.
I use a region free program fronm DVD Idle, it is not very expensive and there are other similar programs on the Internet. Use Google to search for them.
Have a look at www.dvdidle.com

It is burned into the chips! Buy new dvd reader writer for each region. DVD makers have made this happen.

Unlocking the region code for dvd player

Hi,

as with any pc related dvd drive. they,re usually subject to between 3-5 user changes. if they,ve been used up, then theres no chance to reset or change them, but to purchase a new drive.
There are alternatives, such as locating a program like DVD Region and CSS free, which will allow your drive to play any region Disk.

Acer 5510 notebook Matshita UJ-845D DVD/CD-R Writer Problem

Unfortunately there are no updates available for the UJ-8xx series (except for Sony - which won't work on other machines) as it just uses an old generic Windows optical device driver.

Your problems lie elsewhere.

These units have very very very strong region restriction - no reported patches or fixes that I can find...

So they come with an original region (the local one for where you bought the laptop) set by the manufacturer. You only have 5 possible region changes before it locks on to the final region permanently*.

There is very little info on the Matsushita (now Panasonic) website - but it appears that when you insert a different region disk into the drive it will automatically change the region restriction setting to that new region (and there goes one of your 5 allowed changes??).

If this is correct then you may start with for example a region 2 restriction (whatever the local region is for your computer) and record various DVDs in region 2 format. Then one day you try (deliberately or accidentally) a region 4 disk. Your drive reads it and changes the default to ... region 4 (using one allowed change)... next you put in one of your old disks - and the drive restriction default is changed back to region 2 (using another of your 5 changes) - until you've used up the 5 changes - when it's locked.

Because it's an odd number, chances are you'll end up with a permanent non-local region restriction...

* and Panasonic/Matsushita will only change it for a cost apparently...

so not very good news...

To help you, try this handy little free tool. It will tell you whether your drive is restricted, which region it's currently set to; and how many changes of the 5 you've already used:
http://hijacker.rpc1.org/discinfo/#Download

now if I could just find out how to change the current region...
