What make and model camera? Many cameras have a button marked with a key or a lock to protect pictures. If yours has one, try pressing it and see whether a confirmation screen comes up.

Also, SD and SDHC cards can be write-protected. If this is the case, take a look at the card. It will have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card. If the switch is already in the proper position, slide it fully the other way and then back again.

Remove picture protection

Select the key icon from the Playback menu to protect/unprotect pictures. See page 33 of this manual: http://www.olympusamerica.com/files/oima_cckb/Stylus_1030_SW_Mju_1030_SW_Instruction_Manual_EN.pdf

How to unlock a photo in camara

The protect function allows a user to protect a picture from accidental deletion. To unprotect a picture on your camera, scroll to the protected picture that you want to delete, then press the Menu button (the button to the right of the Play button.) Scroll down the menu and you should come to an option that allows you to Protect/Unprotect the picture. Since your picture is currently protected, deselect that option. You should then be able to delete the picture normally.

Alternatively, you could also format the memory card, however this deletes ALL photos and data you have on the memory card. If you are trying to completely clear the memory, this is the best way. After turning on your camera, simply press the Menu button, scroll to Setup, then scroll down to Format. Select Format, it will ask you if you want to format the memory card, or the camera's built-in memory. Format whichever one you want to clear, if you are using a memory card then your pictures are stored on the memory card. It will take a few seconds to format.

Hope this helps.

I dont know how to delete a protected picture off my canon power shot a470 camera. Can you help?

You have to unprotect it first. It's a bit confusing because the menu item probably only says "Protect..." but it also takes care of unprotecting too. Go into the menu for "Protect..." and navigate to the protected one. Whatever button you press to switch the protected status (it's the SET button on my Canon) you can use it to turn the protection off as well. When you exit the protection mode, you can delete it.

If i format the camera, will the labeled protected be erased?

Yes. The format operation will delete all pictures, protected or not. The protection only prevents accidental deletion via the delete button.

I can't delete protected pictures

That's the point of protecting pictures. You can remove the protection by reversing the procedure. Full details are in the "Protecting images and Sound Files from Deletion (Protect)" section of the manual (page 120 in my copy). If you need a manual, you can download one at

Canon PowerShot SX20 IS Digital Camera keeps giving me a memory card error. The memory card is a 4gig PNY memory card (lower budget)

Make sure the slide switch on the side of the card is unlocked. Your camera may just want you to format the card in the camera. Download any pics from it first using a card reader if necessary.

Need to delete protected pictures

Try to remove first the memory card of your camera. After you remove the card you can see a small button at the side of the memory card. Just slide the small button to unprotected. Insert your memory card back to your camera and try to delete pictures.
