Tach reads double of old one

CHANGING TACH IN CAR OLD ONE AND TIMING LIGHT BOYH HAVE ENGINE ILDE AT 1100 RPM' PUT DIFFERENT TACH IN IT READS 2000 RPM'S. BOTH TACHS ARE AUTO METERS ANY HELP? THANKS

Look to the connection of the tach wire, see if its on the green wire of the coil, if it is, then clean the connection and see if that helps, if it still doesnt work properly you may have a faulty gauge

Tachometer bad?


An r1 has a self diagnostic fault system, this is done via the tacho so I would say there is a few problems ,usually it will only do it when you first turn it on though.I'll see if I can find a manual and give you a link to it.

Others on internet mention calling Snap On and a free manual might be sent. Otherwise this was found to explains basics:

Reset button - resets the light to zero
Tach/Adv - Toggles between the tach setting and the advance settings.
Flash - On/Off for the strobe
Dec - Decrease the setting
Inc - Increases the setting

Basic use. Hook up the battery leads, Clip the pickup on cylinder number
one. It should come up and ask you to select number of cylinders.
Now it will display the rpms of the engine and can be used as a standard
timing light.
To use the advance feature you need the specs for the engine. They will
tell you that base timing should be something like 4 degrees at 500 rpm.
and that full advance should be something like 30 degrees at 1500 rpms.

Now use the Tach/Adv button to select degrees. Use Dec/Inc to adjust
that number. Then switch to tach and adjust it to the correct number.
When you use the light set properly it will read zero degrees at the set
rpm IF the timing is correct. Use the same thing to check full advance.

The tach itself may be bad. Check with local used parts and get a used one. Should be pretty reasonable to buy the entire dash bezel. Install the entire bezel in your car or carefully remove and replace just the tach

I've had new plugs and wires installed but my car is still idling high. The RPM is at 10 instead of zero when sitting at a light. Midas says my serpentine belt is cracked. Is the serpentine belt the same...


The serpentine belt is not the same as the timing belt! Not sure how your tach reads but at idle it will never be zero unless the car is not running. The tach tells the engine speed and if it is running you have to get some kind of reading. The idle may need adjusted or a vacuum line could be off but a zero reading at idle at a light is not correct.

Yes, but you need a VAS or VAG-COM diagnosis scantool. Yours instrument cluster must be encoded according yours car, with this VAS or VAG-COM tool, because the car have an electronic immobilizer! You need also key's programming! You must know the old and the new (second-hand) instrument cluster pin codes! After that the instrument cluster coding adjusts the various combination of the on board computer according to engine type, cylinder count and country version!

Defective tachometer and speedometer


Do the following:1)key in the ON position:remove the 7.5 gauge fuse.Tach needle should read "0:". 2)put it back,go on the engine and unplug the green plug on the igniter -the big one,with 5 or 6 wires on it.The needle on tach reading should be zero.If not you have a short circuit on the black wire between that plug and the plug on the conbination meter.3) If the reading is zero with the plug disconnected,the black wire for the tach is short-circuited inside the igniter. 1994 f-350 7.3 turbo diesel.tach reading 0 rpm's at idle speed.


yea the 93 to 95 trucks never had a tach that works very long
and first the Tach does not make the od light blink or ck engine lgt
the crank trigger does this little thing is located right in middle front of engine between the vac pump and pwr steering pmp looks like a brass bolt with wires comming out of the back of it costs about 30 bucks (don't forget the locktite blue)
now that should fix the od lights and the ck engine but it may not fix the tach thats done in the tach driver module on back of tach in dash
you can replace this but my vote it's too expensive I did mine just fine with a after market one(50 bucks), bolted it right in front of old one, it hooks up super easy gets it's signal off the alternator stator

im sort of suprized it starts ok with a bad crank trig (eec needs to see +50 rpm to start fuel flow to injectors )

any good shop with a eec scanner can see this in just seconds

You can't, the tach from the gas car reads a signal from the ignition system. Your diesel has no ignition system at all, no can do.
