Question about Craftsman 42 in. Deck 19.5hp Lawn Tractor

1 Answer

I have a 1998 Craftsman garden tractor (917.273030) with a 20 Hp Briggs & Stratton (407777). I have "cherried" her and she runs GREAT. Problems: 1. Over the winter the mice made a home under the engine cowling and chewed through the wiring harness. I repaired the breaks and the system charged itself. Then the system stopped charging, so I replaced the battery and the wiring harness. When the mower deck is engaged, the ammeter drops to negative 5. Any suggestions to fix this? 2. The mower deck will not engage when I pull the PTO switch. I checked and checked the ignition and PTO switches. I seat switch works well. The engine will not turn over if the PTO is engaged. What would you suggest I do?

When the mice cut the wiring harness the connection you made was not properly done. I still believe this is an electrical fault.

Try to check the wiring and make the connection is okay

And also check the voltage coming out of the battery.

I have checked the connections on the new wiring harness several times. They are good. I even jumped some of the connections. Still, no charging. I suspected there might be a bad leg on the ignition switch so I took it off, inspected and cleaned it. No marks or sign of excessive wear or damage. I did the same for the PTO switch. Still, no charging.
To clarify, when I refer to the wiring harness I replaced, I am only talking about the two wires under the engine cowling that lead to the two magnetos (armatures).
Further, to clarify, I have a Craftsman 46 inch, garden tractor with a 20 Hp Briggs & Stratton

What type of oil do I use for Craftsman 42" Briggs & Stratton 17.5 hp Gas Powered Riding Lawn Tractor for oil change

Only use SAE 30 if using conventional oil. Briggs is real specific about that. I highly recommend using synthetic oil in ALL lawn equipment. You can use a multi-viscosity oil like SAE 10W-30 if you use synthetic, but straight 30 weight if using conventional. The brand is up to you.

I have briggs and stratton powered mower with the 18.5 v-twin ohv intek engine modle 407777 type 0121-E5 CODE 000512ZYG MY PROBLEM IS THAT MY CRANKCASE IS FULL OFA GAS OIL MIXTURE THE OIL FILTER ALSO...

When the float in the carb sticks, it allows fuel to drain into the cylinder, that runs pass the rings into the crankcase. When the crankcase is full the pistons cannot go down, and the starter won't turn the engine. Drain all the oil gas mixture, and refill with proper oil. Replace float, needle and seat in the carb bowl. Throughly clean fuel passages, and bowl. If motor won't turn, remove spark plug and turn over engine a few times to remove gas oil mixture from the cylinder too.

You can wash it off with water spray or clean with soapy water. Let engine cool down before cleaning it. Let it dry before running the engine.
