I have the same problem with a Dell Inspiron 6400 that I bough 2 years ago. A technician disconnect some components to verify electric short but the problem continued. He told me that the problem was the motherboard. He replaced it with a use one but the problem continued. Now he say that the problem is not the motherboard, is the cpu. I do not buy the cpu because I think this piece can not be damage in two years. Other technician insist the problem is an electric short in the motherboard but it impossible to verify because the machine doesn't boot.

Most probably the seating of the processor on the motherboard is not proper
check this site and mount the processor properly

I had the same issue with the inspiron 6400. no sounds or no fans spinning. the leds would light up for 3 seconds and then off again. i tried new ram / processor / unplugging components / reseating components. no luck at all. found out that the problem was the mainboard. i found that there was an inductor just below the cpu socket that wasn't functioning. i unsoldered it and took it off the board, cleaned the lans and then resoldered it back. straight away i noticed it slight hum from it when i switched it on, so i then proceeded to plug in the processor / ram and monitor and and happy days it posted the dell splash screen :) hobbled all back together laptop is fully functional again. hope this helps.

Take a look at these tips to extend your laptop battery's life:

  • Use the correct recharging procedure for your Dell Inspiron 6400 E1505 E1501 Battery. Only use the power cord that came with your Dell Inspiron 6400 E1505 E1501 Laptop or an authorized replacement battery.
  • Flilow correct maintenance for your Dell Inspiron 6400 E1505 E1501 Laptop Battery when not in use. Don't leave it in direct sunlight, areas where it will be exposed to extreme temperatures such as car trunks.
  • Use your Dell Inspiron 6400 E1505 E1501 Battery laptop's power management features. The system will run at lower processor speeds when enabling power management features and it will go into "sleep" mode faster when inactive.
  • Buy dell Battery with internal processors such as Li-Ion batteries.
  • Non Li-Ion batteries must be fully discharged and then recharged every 2-3 weeks.
  • If you don't use your Dell Inspiron 6400 E1505 E1501 Laptop Battery laptop for a period of time, you must fully discharge then recharge the dell battery.

First, plug the laptop into a wall charger and then check to see the laptop will boot properly. If the laptop still does not load properly. Try replacing the battery for the Dell Inspiron 6400 with a new one.

Dell Inspiron 6000 powers up, caps lock flashes 9 times, then laptop shut down. Why???

Unplug power cord from laptop, remove battery from laptop. Open memory access panel on the bottom of the laptop. Remove memory module(s) (SO-DIMM). Plug power cord back into laptop. Turn laptop on (with the memory removed), the caps lock and scroll lock LEDs light, then the laptop shuts itself off. Unplug power cord from the laptop. Reinstall the memory modules. Make sure they are seated correctly. Put the battery back in, plug the laptop back in, and power on. Laptop should power on and boot up properly.
May need to hold the power button down to get it to power on properly.

On My Dv5-1125nr both the caps lock and num lock keeps blinking when i turn it on. It's wont boot at all. What kind of hardware problem is this?

First remove the battery and power cord for about a minute. Then plug back in and see if that helps. Otherwise please read the following:

LEDs near Caps Lock and Number Lock keys blink when starting notebook The LED lights near the Caps Lock and Num Lock keys will blink if an error is detected during the start up process. The LEDs will blink a number of times in a sequence and then stop. The number of blinks in the sequence indicates what component caused an error when it was being tested during start up. If the LEDs stop blinking and the computer does not start, you can press the power button again to repeat the tests. Count the number of blinks, and use the chart to identify the error condition. Knowing the number of blinks is helpful when you contact an HP support agent for technical help. Caps Lock/Num Lock LED Component Tested Error Condition LEDs blink 1 time CPU CPU not functional LEDs blink 2 times BIOS BIOS corruption failure LEDs blink 3 times Memory Module error not functional LEDs blink 4 times Graphics Graphics controller not functional LEDs blink 5 times System board General system board failure LEDs blink 6 times BIOS BIOS authentication failure

Blank screen on laptop

Sorry to hear you are having problems. I have had this same issue before with this particular model. The following solution works 90% of the time.Perform a hard reset as the first procedure.
  1. Disconnect all peripheral devices and remove all USB devices and media cards. You want to test the computer not the accessories!
  2. Disconnect the AC power adapter, remove the battery, and then press and hold the power button for at least 15 seconds .
  3. Reconnect the AC power adapter (but do not connect the battery), Press the Power button, Look for glowing LEDs near caps lock and num lock keys, and Listen for sounds of a disk drive and fan turning.
Meaning of Sample Blink Codes for some EFI Notebooks Number of Blinks or Beeps Location of Blinking LEDs Component Being Checked Error Condition Continuous glow Battery power LED Battery The AC adapter is attached and the battery is charging, but does not yet have sufficient charge to power the notebook. 1 Caps Lock/Num Lock CPU CPU not functional 2 Caps Lock/Num Lock BIOS BIOS corruption failure 3 Caps Lock/Num Lock Memory Module error not functional 4 Caps Lock/Num Lock Graphics Graphics controller not functional 5 Caps Lock/Num Lock System board General system board failure 6 Caps Lock/Num Lock BIOS BIOS authentication failure Continuous blink AC power adapter LED Power adapter Insufficient power
Blink codes are often displayed after a user adds memory to the computer but does not seat the module properly. The LEDs may also blink error codes if a hardware component is loose because the computer was dropped or jarred. Some HP Notebook PCs come with one stick of memory but have two memory slots. The problem could be that the stick of memory or one of the memory slots has a bad connection. The memory module compartment on most notebooks is located on the bottom of the case. The exact position varies by model. However, on some models, the memory compartment is under the keyboard. See your User Guide for the exact location of memory modules on your notebook.

Use the following steps to remove and reseat the memory modules: Step 1 - Remove the electrical power To remove all power from the computer and prevent accidental damage to the electronic components, do the following:
  1. Turn off the computer by pressing and holding down the Power button for about 30 seconds.
  2. Unplug the AC adaptor from the notebook.
  3. Slide and hold the battery release latch to the unlock position.
  4. Use your finger to lift the battery up and out.

  • Remove the memory module cover on the bottom of the notebook .Loosen the compartment's retention screws and lift up and remove the memory compartment cover. Remove the memory modules from the memory slots To prevent damage to the memory module, grasp the memory module by the side edges. Do not touch the metal contacts.
1 - Pull the retention clips away from sides of the memory module
2 - Gently pull the module out of the memory module slot
  • Reseat the memory module by holding module at a 45-degree angle, and pressing it firmly into the memory slot until it is seated.

After reseating the memory module, replace the cover over the memory compartment before restarting the computer

Hope this helps FiYa! If you find this solution helpful, please take a moment to leave us some feedback.

    Thank You!

Hi, i have a problem with my Dell Inspirion 6400, after replacing Motherboard laptop won't boot up, after pressing power button, all 3 lights comes up (caps, num and scrl lock) and than back off, power...

I would hook up an external monitor to see if the laptop is working. If it is working fine then you must have a connection problem where the LCD plugs into the motherboard. I am willing to bet it is the LCD cable mot seated correctly. If it does not work on an external monitor try switching the memory chips one at a time if you have 2. Everything you mention indicates it is booting but no video. Good Luck Phil

Dell Inspiro 6400 not starting up

If the Num lock is lit constant, and the Caps Lock and Scroll Lock keys are flashing, the system is reporting a memory error. Power off the system, remove the battery, and follow the user manual from support.dell.com to reseat the memory module(s). If the error persists, you may need to replace the memory and/or the system board of the portable.
