Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

Picture is great - no sound issues. HOWEVER, after the set has been on for an average of 2 - 3 hours, it just shuts off. I can turn it back on with the remote and it comes back on for another 10 - 15 minutes and then shuts off again. Please help - there doesn't seem to be anyone in Indianapolis who works on Loewe Televisions.

I may be able to help you with your Loewe flat panel TV.

It sounds like a power supply / voltage regulation since by the sounds of it, the set works quite well 'cold', but becomes increasingly troublesome as it becomes warm or hot.

Generically speaking, I recommend you do what you can to make sure the set is running as 'cool' as possible, as it may be less of an electronics failure problem, and more of an overheating problem.

  1. Make sure the set is not next to a heating vent or radiator - if it is, close the vent or dial down the radiator.
  2. Ensure air can pass freely through the cooling channels in the frame of the TV; use compressed air or a vacuum to remove any build up of dust or debris.
  3. If you are comfortable opening the TV housing, unplug it and let it sit for 10 minutes. Then remove whatever screws are necessary to access its guts and blow compressed air over the circuit boards to remove dust there. Look for cooling fans and make sure they are clean and can spin freely.
If these steps do not help your situation, you may consider posting the full model number of your set here, and we may be able to help figure out which parts you might try replacing.

If you are looking for a service shop near downtown Indianapolis, you might try:

  • ITR Electronics 1453 East Washington Street, Indianapolis, IN 46201(317) 636-3108, or
  • Wilson's Radio & TV Service 2322 West 10th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46222-3110(317) 638-2162

I hope that helps.

Tv keeps shutting off without warning

To address your question:

If no error blink code exists (power light or other blinks a specific number of blinks) it likely is a issue in the power supply of the set which usually will give an error blink code of some type.

Common failure reasons include but not limited to:

Yes, dirt inside (dust to be kind) will trigger shutdown etc.

A lamp will usually before it fails give some indication like a dimmer picture but dirty fans and dust inside can also do this.

In our shop if it is dirty inside first thing is it goes out the door and gets a good dose of compressed air--usually looks like a dust storm.

Lamp life is on average 2,000 hours (average user it is 2 years) and generic lamps have a lesser life.

Ballast usually is suspect if several lamps have failed in a shorter period of time but can just fail.

These are my thoughts from working on this and similar sets--what have you tried so far?

TV shuts off and red standby/timer lights blinks red until I power the set off. When it shuts down it does so with a very loud snap. When I turn it back on the screen is blue and has light blue...

The most common cause for what you are seeing is a shorted gun in the picture tube. When 2 elements (heater and cathode) of one of the guns inside the neck of the picture tube touch, that gun goes full on and overloads the flyback (high voltage) transformer. If it is in the blue gun, the screen will go bright blue with light blue "retrace" lines in it. The computer senses the overload and shuts the set off. At 2 years old the tech most likely tried removing the short by arcing between the elements. This works sometimes but the short often comes back a few months later. Another attempt at removing the short could be tried, and it might work this time, but it may or may not work for long. The ony other solution is to replace the picture tube but that would cost much more than the set is worth. A qualified tech will be able to tell you if this is the problem in your set.

I replaced the power supply with one from an online salvage store and it worked fine for about two hours and then it shut off, turned it back on and then twenty minutes later off again...repeat... need an electronics person to trouble shoot and trace which resistors and or capacitors are overloading.
