I'm afraid it sounds like a bad head or other simular issue that makes the drive unreadable. There are a million and one ideas out there for restoring a bad drive temporarily but usually nothing works if it is bad enough. First try it on several different machines to see if you get lucky. Also try to let it rest (no plugged in) for a while (several hours) to see if you get different results. Sometimes you can try lightly tapping it as is sometimes jars it just enough to work for a bit. If you do get it working Immediately get your data off and always plan on having a second backup, always, from now on.
There are data recovery companies that can extract the data for you if it is very important. I recommend "On-Track", however you will pay around $1500 for their services.

Good Luck

Backup Plus Potable 500 GB Light Blinking and disk not being read I've got a Seagate 500 GB backup plus external hard disk which is about 2 months old. The hard disk has started to make a slight clicking...

The clicking could be a symptom of imminent failure of the hard drive . Back up all information from this drive as soon as possible. It may be something that a program such as checkdisk can fix but be sure to backup drive before attempting any fixes just to be safe. Hope this helps.

The noise is made by the rubbing of the reading head on the platters = mechanical defect.
There's nothing that can be done, by anyone , to fix it - it's dead and all the data on it is lost.

My hard drive isnt working.the lap top isnt reading it its not going on

If it still has a valid warranty, exercise the warranty to get a free replacement.

Otherwise, open the enclosure, and separate the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter, and connect the disk-drive as a 'slave' disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if the adapter was the problem.

Try to connect the external disk-drive to a different computer.
If you still cannot access any files, then either:
* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the case is malfunctioning,
* the disk-drive inside the case is malfunctioning.

Read the serial-number of the external disk-drive from the case, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and check to see if the "warranty" for the device is still available. If so, the manufacturer will replace the device -- you might have to pay "shipping" to send your device to them.

If the warranty has expired, open the case, remove the disk-drive, and connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in some desktop computer, to see if the USB-to-disk-drive device was the problem.

While the case is open, you could purchase a new disk-drive to fit into the case, and then close the case, and once again have a working "external" disk-drive.

Makes "clicking" noise and will not mount

that is a common noise when your HD just failed it can be internal or external most of them work the same way, there is 2 metal readers that hover on top of the actual disks to read the information. Those readers get stuck or keep going back and forward trying to read (that is the clicking noise) a way to try to fix the problem (it works sometimes) is replacing the circuit board attached to the hard drive (inside the metal enclosure) and you have to find one with the same characteristics as the one you have now. sometimes when we really need to recover the information we try that and it may, may not work

if it works for you, don't forget to rate me

WD External drive not recognized on computer

If the drive was running when it fell, and it doesn't have a head locking mechanism (or was in mid-read, or mid-write and the head wasn't locked down) then your disk may have experienced a head crash. The read/write heads float over the surface of the disk. If they slam into the disk, they will make a divot, boucne, make another divot, and continue bouncing until the kenetic energy is dissipated. In the places where magnetic material is removed, you won't get any data back. You may be able to recover data elsewhere, using a recovery company, but it won't be cheap. If your data is critical, you have a good chance of recovery using a service such as Seagate Recovery
http://seagatedatarecovery.com/ They recover data from all brands and I have used them They're very good, but very expensive ($800 range)
