Question about HP L1702 17" LCD Monitor

1 Answer

I have three of these HP 1702's that all flicker on but then go off. Then they'll flash back on for a second and turn off again. I opened one up and looked for bad caps using http://s807.photobucket.com/albums/yy352/budm/HP%201702/ as a guide. I discovered two of the 470uf capacitors to be obviously "domed" so I replaced them with new 470's I bought at RadioShack. I put it back together and hooked it up to a computer and found that it is still flashing on and off. The other caps all apear normal to me. They are neither bulging on the top or the bottom. What should I do next?

You should replace them as a set as I show in the pictures (all the one by the heat sink and the one by small blue caps, 6 total), those that did have domed top were checked bad because they have high ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance). If you use standard caps from Radio Shack they may not last since they are not low ESR type. I use PANASONIC FM or FC series from Digikey. You also need to check those 4 transistors by the small blue caps since when the DC filter caps went bad it can take out the transistors also. http://s807.photobucket.com/albums/yy352/budm/HP%201702/?action=view&current=DSCF2053.jpg
I hope he monitor does have bad lamp assemblies also.

I've got the same monitor but my power inverter board looks nothing like the one in the links. I replaced the 2-470uf 16v caps an 3 - 1000uf 16v I could find any 16v so I used 35v. But in my search for the transistors I couldn't find locate them on the board. So I put everything back together and its still doing thing of turning on for a few seconds then turns out. Any other help would be great. Thanks.

Engin light is on how to check codes

To check for trouble codes turn the ignition switch to run for three seconds (one second pause after the fuel pump stops running) and then turn the switch back to off for three seconds. Repeat this process again. Now turn the switch to ignition and wait for about 8 seconds and the check engine lamp will start flashing the codes. If there are codes present the light will flash rapidly (about three per second) then there will be a 2 second pause with the lamp off. The lamp will then flash one or more times to indicate the first digit of the trouble code. It will be on and off for about 1 second. Count the number of times it flashes for the first digit of the trouble code. Then there will be about a 2 second delay then will flash again for the second digit. After flashing the second digit there will be a 2 second delay and additional trouble codes will be flashed. Write down the numbers and when they start repeating themselves the trouble code transmission is completed. All trouble codes consist of two digits.
If the lamp flashes only the 3 flashes per second there are no trouble codes present.
If there are codes present, let me know and I can advise you of their meaning.

HP 1702 Monitor comes on but immediately goes off.

There are five capacitors on the power board which have dried out and need replacement. A reputable repair shop should be able to fix this for around $50.00 including labor.

HP monitor vs17 goes black with power light flashing

I have repaired an HP 1702 monitor that had similar symptoms by replacing the capacitors on the power supply board but you have to have some electronic knowledge and do some soldering if you can buy the replacement capacitors($10+/-) from a supply store. They (at least 1) will be swollen up on the ends and may have a tar-like substance leaking from them. It is best to replace them all (may be 4 depending on the model).
